I came across this ad for one of our local radio stations. Part of the job description looks like this:
I wonder how that would look at part of the job description on a Joint Needs Assessment?
"This person can not suck at preaching and in fact win listeners and effectively model."
Does it resonate? Or not?

Well it fulfills the duty to truth in advertising. Can't see that language getting past Presbytery though. Is there a church-speak equivalent?

Ranks right up there with "Cab attract and keep youth, raise funds, change the world but not the congregation, and walk on water."

Actually, more realistic that walking on water or attracting youth.

More disrespectful than any two people speaking a language that the rest of the group doesn't understand, DKS?
I wonder if we'd ever consider our church-speak or theological jargon to be similarly disrespectful?

Sometimes I have to wander away when I can't seem to find the right 'tone' in my posts. I've been lurking for awhile, but didn't post... thought I'd try again. :)
It was great to meet you, too!

Exactly the same, Richard. Exactly the same. Churchspeak is equally disrespectful outside of a particular context (i.e. a church court or gathering of peers) within the church. Translation or summarization is always appreciated and a gesture of hospitality.

My big complaint is ready reliance on acronyms -- step out of regular church gatherings for a year, and there are new ones that confound those not in on the jargon.

But that's part of the joy of being in a specialized field, isn't it? I went to library school and came out with 50% more acronyms in my brain than I had going in. And 12 years in IT for a healthcare company has increased that total by another 100% or so.

I have been known to ask the "dumb" questions in Presbytery meetings on a regular basis. You know things like:
What is MPE?
What is a JNAC?
What's a remit?
etc...
On the principle that there are always people in the court who may not know what we are talking about. It has gotten me some rather nasty looks at times...

But if our goal is to offer the gospel to everyone, expecting them to learn our language before they can understand it is like expecting people to learn Klingon in order to watch an episode of Star Trek.

For a number of years Toronto Conference provided an acronym translation section in their pre-conference book.

"Cannot suck at preaching" -- it would probably be helpful to be a bit clearer on what that means... is it about delivery, presence, volume, tone? Or is it about content -- and if so, do you want Bible-based, related to daily living preaching? Or learning about historical contexts and exegesis? Or using a digital projector to link images to issues and thoughts raised?
I have found it humourous/sad/interesting over the years, to hear the compliments I receive about my preaching. "I can always hear you" is always reassuring from the hearing-aid crowd. "I love how you explain the Bible reading" and "it's great how you relate the story to our actual lives" makes me wonder about previous preachers (keeping in mind the short memories of some congregants). "I take issue with something you said today" is the hardest to hear but somehow one of the best -- folks are listening, engaged, and wrestling with the text with me. all good...
