cool.
of course the Church should speak on 'public policy' as it relates to Spiritual and social justice issue's as it affects the communities they serve.
what the public does with what the Church expresses in relation is another issue, as is what the Church response is to the possible rejection or interest of it sharing in concerns regarding our community.
i dont think there is any danger of the Church 'vetoing' governing public policies based on its desires in the near future.

The story begins at around the one minute mark, with the comments of the Senator, and at around the 2 minute and 50 second mark for the interview with the moderator

do your Christian duty even if your Christ, your G_d, etc doesn't exist.
do good because it it the right thing to do
do good even if you know your Church will never be again

I found that interview, and Harper's comments afterwards kind of scary. Why was the senator saying what she was saying? Is there a move to silence church groups now?
I hope I am just being paranoid......

There you have it folks! Nicole Eaton, appointed by Stephen Harper, revealed for what she is, namely, an uninformed extremist in the service of the elite. A living breathing advertisement for the abolition of the Senate.

Last year Nicole Eaton recommended that the "stately polar bear" should be Canada's national symbol. The polar bear is presently being driven toward extinction by global warming and degradation of its environment. Meanwhile Nicole Eaton carries on a campaign against environmental groups (and churches too) pressing for the reforms and self-restraint that could save this animal.

It's a tactic and a belief of those who want blame the poor and those disadanatged for their condition. (unless they are a vicitim of a crime)
Politically it is called a belief in meritocracy, which is likely also related to a theolgical understanding that God causes illness, war, and poverty. Thus is is the churches job to pray and feed, not take political actions, because politics has nothing to do with people.
I read her Senate biography, and it appears that all of Senator Eatons community experience comes from sitting on board of directors of various arts and education orgaisation. Many boards of such organisations are essentially filled with weathy patrons, who are able to bring an X number of dollars to the organisation, I am assuming she is an extremely wealthy person. Howver she might not be wealthy but is just married to a wealthy person (Thor Eaton, of the Eaton Fortune and department store)

Thanks Alex. That comfirms my fears. It seemed like a tactic. Spread misinformation and pretty soon it will be the truth. I listened to The House this morning. They were talking about Harper not wanting to fund organizations that go against the government's views. That is truly scary. While I understand it to some degree, I do not think it is right to promote a world where we all support the government and where we all think alike. We need diversity. If you are not going to fund thos aginst you, then also do not fund those who support you. Otherwise, you are running towards a dictatorship.

The main problem many people have with Conservative and other Party's s policies is when they are based on short term objectives rather than long term ones.. We all know that often governments end up adopting opposition ideas and programs. I am afraid that the Conservative party has adopted US politcal ethics. Where they just strive to discredit all other points of views. Rather than accepting that in the long term that it is good to have others develop different policies and differences, because there is a strong possibility that in the future that some of those policies will become your own, and it will be of benfit to evryone to have people involved in fine tuning them.
The Harper governement sees no value in devoloping our democratic structures. Everything is black or white. In the long term I believe that will lead to the destruction not of our democracy, but of the Conservative Party. I believe we will see their contempt for all non Conservative Party supporters and other factors end up eliminating any possibility that they can beat the NDP in the next election. Which will signal for moderate conservatives and their "free enterprise" supporters who do not hate the environment, LGBT, science and, rally around the Liberals, in order to have a chance of stopping the NDP from forming the next government. Reducing the Conservative Party to the dustbin of history.

I do note, however, that I would feel differently if this was aboot, say, the Catholic Church politicking against same-sex marriage -- I would feel a kind of righteous indignation and pleasure of sorts at gov't interference of this type...
This is just me noticing my biases :3

It is something many have claimed for several years. Just more evidence, that's all.

As a panel (CBC Power & Politics...Thursday, June 7, I think) put it: Fist they defunded the women's groups, then KAIROS, now the Roudtable on the Environment and the Economy.
You're only paranoid if they Aren't coming to get you....

That is the rub isn't it? Most times I hear people complaining about the church "sticking its nose where it doesn't belong" it turns out that they think the church is on the "wrong" side of the argument. ANd people on all ends of the various political/theological/social spectra fall into that trap.

On the subtopic of "Is Senator Eaton rich?" She is about as rich as they get. Her dad was one of the senior partners in Montreal's biggest law firms (the Tetrault firm). She married Thor Eaton who I imagine still has a bit of the Timothy Eaton fortune jingling around in his jeans. Thor runs his own venture capital firm as I recall ie.: he is much like a bank. She is the daughter of Edmond Jacques Courtois[1] and sister of Canada Post Chairman Marc Courtois. Edmond Jacques Courtois became, after retiring from his firm, the Chair of the Security and Intelligence Review Committee from 1992 until 1996.

Imho, this is a disappointing interview. They had Ms. Tindal exactly where they wanted her -- on the hot seat -- and yet they failed to ask her any questions at all about the issue we all want answers on.
Rich blessings.

Actuallly Jae it is rather nice to have someone asked for an interview on a specific topic and have the interviewer stay on that topic! Not everyone gets that courtesy

The train thing again? Get off that f---ing horse, Jae. If she was a Baptist leader, you'd be welcome to it, but she's UCCan's moderator so if they don't have a problem with how she did that trip, it's certainly not your place to go looking for one.

Amen, Gord. I have had enough of the media digging for every scrap of dirt and making some up when they don't find any.

Jae - I'm assuming you're, once again, referring to the train issue. I think you may be the only one who cares enough to demand an answer about it, so my question to you is - have you tried contacting her and asking her yourself? Her email address is readily available, and I'm sure she'd be glad to answer your question. You can find her email on this site: http://www.united-church.ca/contact/gco.
