One of the great leaders of the United Church of Canada has passed on to be with God. If you grew up in the United Church in the 1960's, you were exposed to the New Curriculum. Peter Gordon White was one of the leaders in the development of the material and authored several of the volumes. Started in the 1950's, it had a huge impact on the direction and theology of the United Church of Canada. Peter was often a guest in our home, as my father was involved in the writing and training for the New Curriculum. His peers would have been David Forsyth, Alvin Cooper, Frank Fidler and Wilbur K. Howard.

REV. DR. PETER GORDON WHITE November 23, 1919 - March 12, 2013. United Church of Canada, Educator, Editor. Peter was born in Scotland and arrived in Canada at the age of two with his mother, father and grandmother. He grew up in Winnipeg with his sister Harriet. He graduated from the University of Winnipeg in Arts and Science and Theology. Further studies took him to Union Seminary in New York. He was ordained in 1946. During his ministry Peter made significant contributions to new national programs in the Church. His sermons and teaching were appreciated across Canada and abroad. In 1950 Peter married Patricia Armstrong, a physician, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. Together they created an exceptionally happy home with their children David, Patty and John. David is married to Dr. June Carroll, Patty is married to Rev. Dr. Stephen Farris and John to Sophia Grigoriadis. The family continues with seven grandchildren: Adam, Julia and Laura; Allan (Judith) and Daniel; and Emil and Theo; and great-grandchildren Anna and Peter. Grandpa Peter's personal delights included music, theatre (especially Shakespeare) and Muskoka cottage life with his family and friends. Peter was predeceased by his father John Gordon White (WWI), his mother Christine White, OBE, and his sister Harriet (Leslie White). Peter was loved and enjoyed by his extended family of nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as his many colleagues and friends. Peter and Patricia were married for 62 years. She and the family, along with many friends, give thanks for his wonderful life, and mourn his passing. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 17; and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 18. Funeral service to be held in ROSEDALE UNITED CHURCH, 159 Roxborough Drive on Tuesday, March 19 at 3:00 p.m. Cremation to follow.
