Puppets in Church

Happy World Puppetry Day (March 21)!

How does your church use puppetry in worship and/or Sunday School?

We never use them in church... though I don't see anything wrong with doing so.

I LOOOOOVE puppets! I use them all the time to teach my grandchildren stories with a moral. We take turns creating stories about bullying, sharing, temper tantrums :) and just about anything that has reared it's ugly head. We also do happy themes like going to the zoo, being a teacher in a school, etc....

I would think kids would really respond to participating in puppets shows in Sunday School.

Puppet shows are great! Our congregation has a professional puppeteer who does wonderful shows from time to time during the service, in the Sunday School and at special events. She even made us a beautiful puppet who is named after our church.

IIRC, the last minister at my family church before I left used to have some that he used to illustrate his ongoing series of chidren's stories. They were great stories, sometimes more insightful than the sermon. Not sure where he got the stories from.

When I was Staff Ass, I invited the Baptist Church Puppet Ministry to come. They were wonderful - animals that sang Everyone loved them. The second time I invited them , the church was packed because they were so good the time before.

A mother of a puppet went to the pulpit ( without invitation) and gave a mini sermon and told the congregation that the devil was on the street waiting to snatch the children and everyone should be vigilant.

I was aghast and spent the following week talking to parents who were dealing with their children who were asking who was the devil.

Such a wonderful ministry that turned me against puppets ( especially from a Baptist Church). Never invited them again. Lost revenue for the puppateers but interestingly we were never approached about why they werent invited again.

Central United Church has the Holy Hands Puppet team. They participate on a regular basis in worship services, and do a great deal of outreach at other churches and at community events. They do mostly songs.

Here's a picture of them performing at Port Colborne's Canal Days weekend.

Thanks all for the input. It seems like a lot of good work is being done with puppets. Rev. Steven -- thank you for the photo, that's fun. waterfall -- the puppet show has always been one of my favorite scenes in Sound of Music. Love that catchy song. Rita -- Dog and Frog, sounds cute. somegal -- you're blessed to have a pro with you. Mendalla -- Isn't it often the case that something else in the service is more (or as much) insightful as the morning message -- and I say that as someone who sometimes preaches. crazyheart -- that mother was waaay too overzealous.

I think puppets are good for kids for the children's story.

Im more into separate services for children and adults.  I personally find children things boring and cause me to daydream during church.

Love your puppet team programme Rev Steven Davis!  Seems like a great way to bring together a multi-generational group ministry.

One of my puppet favs is Bethlehemian Rhapsody - look it up on youtube :-)
