Anyone using an LCD or plasma large screen TV in place of projection for worship in their sanctuary? I'm trying to noodle around high ambient light conditions.

This is what we use at Westhill. We have two screens. The lighting has not been an issue. I didn't have anything to do with screen placement but if you call the church they may be able to connect you with the people who did. We have a number of techies.

we have two projection screens the one at the front has a bit of an issue because it is facing south therefore the sun shines through the window. We are having a stain glass window put it to cut down on the natural light.

We just installed one in our sanctuary within the past month. On Sunday Mornings our sanctuary is mainly lit by natural light coming mostly from behind the congregation. So far we've had a couple of issues, but lighting has not been one of them.

we have a projection screen on the wall at the end of the sanctuary, but due to height & sight lines, and somewhat ambient light issues, we are also installing 2 lcd screens part way back to serve the people in the mid-to- back rows.
I've also seen it at Lawrence Park Community (United) Church - very effective in their very bright sanctuary. They have walls full of windows with no way to block them, and the lcd screens work well.

-DKS you might want to get in touch with this company - they're in Oakville & specialize in retrofitting churches with AV equipment - they did a great presentationat a presbytery workshop last year - http://www.alectrosystems.com/

DKS - usually you're arguing that tech isn't really helpful. I'm interested about where you're headed.

David, our sanctuary is quite bright with natural light coming in a bank of windows on the west side of the sanctuary, and windows on the east near the ceiling. We've recently sought proposals for a new sound and projection system and will be moving to projector to the rear of the sanctuary - 75 feet from the screen. None of the the companies giving quotes felt we would have a problem with projection - the keys being sufficient lumens in projector, and a decent quality lens. The quotes on the projectors range from 4 to 15k including the necessary lens...Most of the situations where I've experienced LCD or Plasma TV's in leiu of projection have been in places where size is more of an issue and a screen would create issues with ascetics.

That's part of it too, Jim. We have 2 story floor to ceiling windows on the east, south and west sides of the building. The aestheics are a question. So is placement in a historic and architechtually significant sanctuary. Many issues; few answers.

I don't think it's helpful, but I'm doing exploration. I work in video and know what engery and effort it requires to do it well. But the congregation I serve is working with consultants who have offered suggestions. It's a long, complex story.

Change is quite regularly hard. Keep experimenting and the right combination will eventually fall into place.

We have about five years to make substantive changes. And we don't know what those changes will be.

You might want to check with First+Metropolitan UC in Victoria, David. They have a combination install of projector and plasma.

They've set it up very well there. I was at a service there last week where they were not using the projections or screens and found that I didn't even notice the screens.

JML said "screen would create issues with ascetics." LOL - Yes, enriching worship by involving more of the senses would definitely be an issue with ascetics (def: austere/ denial of material satisfaction), but I assume you actually mean esthetics.
