What are you singing this Easter Sunday?

I've just sat down to select hymns for Easter Sunday, and I thought it would be edifying to see what other congregations will be singing this joyful Eastertide.

The congregation I work for has a tradition of singing "Jesus Christ is Risen Today" (VU 155) (or Wesley's lyrics "Christ the Lord is Risen Today" (VU 157)) as a processional on Easter Sunday morning. For fun, I looked up the first known instance of this hymn tune from the 1708 hymnal Lyra Davidica. There have been some modifications over the years, but what a treat to have that resource available online.

Hi LadyIslay,

We will be singing Christ the Lord is Risen Today at our sunrise some other place service.

In our Regular Sunday Worship we will be singing Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Christ Be Our Host, Whatever Hymn our choir picks for the Children's Hymn, and Jesus Shall Reign.  Our choir will toss in an anthem.

Grace and peace to you.

John

GordW - "Roll the Stone Away" is an interesting song. It was while singing that piece on an Easter Sunday morning at Knox United in Parksville (my home church, where I was baptised and married), under the direction of the composer, that I was finally tipped over the edge and realised that I had to answer the call to convert to  Catholicsm (rather than to seek ordained ministry in the United Church, something I also felt called to). One year later, I was confirmed and became a member of the Catholic Church, though I still serve as a choir director in a United Church congregation.

Here's what I picked out (pending approval from the rest of the team!):

Hymns for Easter (suggestions):
Welcome, Happy Morning - 161
The Strife is O're - 159
Now the Green Blade Rises - 186
Jesus Christ is Risen Today - 155
Anthem: On the Third Day by Allan Pote

Hymns for Easter II (suggestions):
This Joyful Eastertide - 177
Hey Now! Singing Hallelujah - 121 in More Voices
Good Christians All, Rejoice and Sing - 169
Thine is the Glory - 173
Anthem: All in the April Evening by Hugh S. Roberton

Lady Islay - good to see a fellow Islander here! I have been to Parksville many times and even spent a couple of weekends at Knox - once for a workshop that was happening there and once for a joint youth group sleepover. You certainly live in a beautiful part of the world!

We usually sing Jesus Christ is Risen Today on Easter. As for the other hymns - I won't find those out until I arrive at church on Sunday morning.

Here's a link to the wonderful version of Hallelujah that our youth sang this morning (caution - some of the pics are quite graphic - may disturb some people)
