BREAKING NEWS:
Another earthquake has hit Christchurch in New Zealand...
2.08pm: Police say "multiple fatalities" have been reported at several locations in the central city. This includes two buses crushed by falling buildings. A doctor and emergency services are attending.
2.04pm: Key advises people to leave the central city. Evacuees will be looked after, he says.
2.02pm: Prime Minister John Key tells Parliament details are sketchy but the people of Canterbury are going through a "truamatic and frightening" experience.
An emergency cabinet meeting will be held at 3pm. Key will then fly to Christchurch if conditions allow.
2.00pm: Transit New Zealand has been unable to contact its staff in Christchurch and at the Lyttelton Tunnel, which is close to the epicentre.
1.58pm There is huge amounts of silt and liquefaction is bubbling up around people's legs. People are getting out of their cars and abandoning them.
1:57pm A Telecom spokesman says the company's technical engineers are working "frantically" to ascertain the extent of interruption to phone lines in Christchurch. He said "substantial interruption" was expected.
I see from photography that the Christchurch Cathedral is significantly damaged: i have a good friend who ministers there.

CBC said no fatalities reported but I guess that is now old news and needs updating.

The latest number of fatalities is seven. This site has an article and a video clip that shows the extent of the damage.

It is at 65 with at least another 200 unaccounted for. And the devastation is considerable.

Every time something like this happens in another corner of the world, it reminds me that it could so easily happen where I live - and that there's really only so much you can do to prepare for it. I've got a survival kit ready to go and my local evacuation centre is just down the street, so if I should happen to be at home when an earthquake hits, I know what to do. At work I'm also well covered - but if I should happen to be somewhere else...
My Mom has a cousin in Christchurch, so I am thinking in particular of him at this time. We haven't heard anything yet about whether he survived or not.

My condolences to those who've lost loved ones, and hopes for a good recovery to those injured in the Christchurch earthquake.
As there are many Kiwis living here in Sydney, our news channels are keeping us up to date.
It's a sad and traumatic time for our cousins across "the ditch".
