Since I moved back to the city, I am dismayed to find no green bin at my apartment building to recyle organic waste. I have lots of apple cores, carrot tops, coffee grounds etc. that just go to the landfill.
After some initial revulsion, I am looking at the idea of turning that stuff into compost for my planters by starting my own worm farm. I don't have much of an issure with the bin outside, but worms need to be warm during the winter, meaning I'd need to coexist with them in my living quarters.
I heard they sometimes escape if they aren't happy.
Still, I'm reading about vermiculture, (the term for worms in the house), and haven't dismissed the idea yet. I doubt it would work for an average family, since the amount of garbage the worms can process is quite limited, but I should take care of mine.
Anyone have any experience with doing this or thoughts about it?

I used one a long time ago. It was a part of our earth-club in elementary school. It was a big plastic bin with a lid, I don't think worms could escape easily. I think the brand was worm-away, but a quick search didn't come up with it, so there's a good chance it doesn't exist anymore. It had a type of red worm, but I don't remember the actual species (cuz I was probably about 11).
We couldn't put a lot of food in there, and I think we sometimes brought in something specific from home (I seem to recall egg shells) to keep the worms happy.

We had one for quite a while..but then dawned on us why did we have it, when our compost could be outside.
it worked fine....i think in the end, we let it get too wet....thought they were dead..put it outside in the compost, and we had red wigglers in the compost.

Thanks for the info, Chemgal and Pinga. Believe me, this isn't something I would ever attempt if I could have an outdoor compost bin.
I think the egg shells are to keep the environment in there from becoming too acidic.
Can't raise chickens on the patio though...........

We also did this in elemtary school and as I remember it there was no problem.
But what will you do with the compost?
Perhaps you should call your city council and ask how you are supposed to recycle and green bin

The compost will be easy to distribute. I am planning to obtain a plot in the community garden in the spring, and I have lots of planters on the patio. The cherry tomatoes and herbs wouldn't mind some compost.
I believe the city does have a recycle depot where you can bring organic waste and well as bottles and paper. It doesn't seem to make sense to drive across town to drop the stuff there. My building has bins for containers and paper.
