What is a more powerful motivator, the emotions or the intellect?
I would say the emotions are our primary motivator. But, in us humans, the emotions are, more often than not, determined by what we think. What we think determines what we feel, and what we feel determines what we do. Ultimately, what we think determines our fate.
Thinking we are absolutely right makes everyone who does not share our opinion absolutely wrong. Because only we think exactly the way we do, everyone else becomes a potential threat. This colours our emotional stance toward others, and makes for an us-versus-them attitude.
If we were to regard our conceptual reality as a work of art, and everyone as a unique creator of their own unique reality, then we would expect each other's realities to be different, and joyously share our respective creations with each other.
Of course, there needs to be a societal consensus on matters concerning the wellbeing of society. But this could be a consenus of wisdom on what works best for society as a whole rather than a contest on whose opinion is right or wrong.
The consensus-orientated people of Switzerland, for instance, have become so outraged by the excessive salaries of their banking excecutives, and the resulting huge income gap that threatens to de-stabilize their society, that they propose a guaranteed monthly income of 2,500 Swiss franks (about $ 2,800) for every Swiss adult, with the high earners subsidizing those who earn under $ 2,800. The higher one's earnings, the more one contributes to this subsidy. Many of the very rich actually agree with this because they value living in stable society.
