I had just finished a book at 8:20 pm.  I turned out my reading light, listened to the dishwasher in the next room and realized that it would soon be done - and settled back in my easy chair for a nap.

I used the unassailable logic that my utility voltage would be higher during this event if the predictions panned out.  Higher voltage = less kw on the meter.

I baked, did laundry, and a welding job I had reserved for the "hour".  Then I had a long hot bath.........

My house and yard were ablaze with the extra lights I mounted.  I failed to notice any reduction in lighting in  my rural neigbourhood.

"Earth Hour" has nothing to do with conservation but, according to it's sponsors, the WWF, is a political statement.

I have no interest in supporting the genicidal WWF which pays it's head well over $200,000/year.  It ceased to be concerned with wildlife and has concentrated on political propaganda for nearly 2 decades and it's own survival........

A nice man installed a "smart meter" here today and devulged that the official HYDRO ONE announcement of a load reduction was drafted and posted prior to the event.

This is much like this whole CO2 AGW scam which has only one filsy scientific basis----computer models....doing what they are designed to----tell lies.

The oceans are actually cooling and global weather flattened after 1998 and has cooled since 2005......all the "Great Warming" was, was a strong EL NINO......part of the Pacific Decadal Oscilation.....a natural cycle......

Interesting.  A poster named for a non-existent creature writing a post based on non-existent thought.

Fascinating.

Not to mention that global warming is yesterday's news and there are very few scientists on the planet that won't agree that Climate Change is happening and human production of waste, whether it be in material garbage or gaseous Co2, is a contributor.

However for me, it doesn't even matter if the End of the World is near, what does matter is that conspicuous consumption is an unnecessary destruction of finite resources.  Regardless of whether it happens in 2010 or 3010 or 4010, if humans keep up the relentless creation of crap that we have right now future generations won't be able to see the trees for garbage heaps.

Monty Hummel of the WWF is the most pragmatic person I have ever met.

Sasquatch is correct that Earth Hour is a political statement more than it is an attempt to actually conserve power.  That doesn't mean it's a political statement that doesn't deserve to be made.

I'M FOR EARTH HOUR! It's far too un-poltical in my view... it does, however, speak for an awareness that sane energy use is probably THE biggest, most pressing and urgent over-riding political issue of the decade and, probably, for much, much longer. Economies of ANY sort need to be subject to resource exploitation constraints. Everyone must learn to live within the planet's capacities or humanity will obliterate itself...  Hasta la vista, baby.

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.

Bumping this up as a reminder to everyone.  I'm looking forward to turning out the lights, turning off my computer, etc., and sitting in front of the fire to acknowledge the tremendous stress being placed on our natural resources and the earth.

It may only be a symbolic gesture....but still worthwhile.

We had a church family supper with 4 families and just let the sun go down as our candles & kids' flashlights kept us going. It was really nice to encourage each other because I think we had all felt like the community around us is ignoring such things.  But every family who was invited was warned (b/c adding Earth Hour to the dinner was secondary) that we were doing it - and every family was thrilled to have the chance to celebrate it together!

Symbolic gesture - hmmm.  but that is what Christmas is, and Easter, and communion.  Or Canada day or anything else.  It signifies values we all hold and lets us hold them up high.  We can have Earth day every day, but celebrating it is exactly what a symbol is about.
