Hi grammymouse, quite a few people got this, including me.
There's 2 topics in social about this already.

Thank you, chemgal. I wondered which category was appropriate to post this in, and although I considered "Social", I didn't check there. I guess it doesn't hurt to spread the info.

and these things pop up on occassion--if the price of liberty is eternal vigilance the price of the internet is eternal scams

Well said, Gord. Despite the truth you state, I'm still infuriated by these predatory, despicable attempts to exploit the vulnerable.

And if we continue to have this weird weather in Ottawa, raining now and supposed to be +7C later this week, I'm liable to be digging the garden by the end of the month

Maybe I can cash in on this. Everybody send me a mere twenty bucks and we'll call it even. Fair enough?

Me too! Glad to see others' responses.
I haven't been on the website for quite some time, so just discovered today that I had received the same email. Shouldn't there be some way to block spam on this site the way we can on our regular email services?

What sort of filter would you recommend? There's little about such messages that could be reliably used to distinguish them from other, genuine messages - at least, not by a computer program.

Users who join simply to spam usually have their accounts deleted fairly fast. My university email gets way more spam. IMO there isn't enough spam here (yet) for a spam filter to be worthwhile.
