Interesting idea Alex. Although I think it would take a little more than that to feed all of the hungry. Seriously if all the Christian churches were to sell their buildings and pool all the money from the sale to feed the poor then I think it could be possible.  According to the stats there are about a billion people who claim to be Christians. If the majority of Christians were serious about making poverty history then I think it could happen, but the sad fact is it isn't one of the top priorities for a lot of religious people IMO.

As much as I like Michael Richards, I found his infamous diatribe last year against black people to be extremely offensive.  Perhaps he would have had less trouble with the fans and the press if he had gone after Catholics, which seems to be a team sport in this forum.

The video isn't an attack on Catholics, it is an attack on churches letting "stuff" get in the way of feeding the world.  I suspect many Catholics would think it an idea with some merit....

First world hunger is a problem because now that Sarah has a 48 inch plasma TV,  the Ads for charities make the starving people look real.   Her problem is not with getting rid of hunger but getting rid of the hungry people on her plasma TV.

Her solution is not to help out, but to get someone else to take responsibility.

Whats really funny is now that her video has been on Youtube for a few days, Google adwords is placing ads for tours of the Vatican and audiences with the Pope on her video.

Goes to show you how Google can make mistakes.

It was similar when I started accessiblechurch.ca. Originally google was placing it high in searches for people wanting to find out how to get rid of people in their churches, and how to fire ministers.  

It sadly turned out that there are more people doing searches on google on how to get rid of people in church, then there are searches of how to include people.

If nothing else she got some people in the WC to talk a bit about the immensity of the problem of world hunger.  For that I'd thank her, even though I don't find her solution very useful.  Any money received from the sale of the Vatican would soon be spent and the hungry would again be hungry.

The suggestion that churches in general sell their assetts might be a bit more effective.  But even that wouldn't solve the problem. 

 Possibly it needs everyone in the world who has more than they need to give it to the cause of eradicating hunger.  Can't see it happening though - we tend to like having tv sets, radios, electronic gadgets, vehicles more advanced than bicycles, spare food in fridges and cupboards,  books, cash to pay for holidays, medication, heating and cooling - the list is almost endless.  I can't think of a valid reason that I can have all these things and more but some other people go hungry.  

I wish I knew the solution!

chansen, I take offense at what offends me.  I think her comments on the Catholic Church and the Holocaust were offensive.   Try to imagine a comedian doing a bit about Jews that gave credence to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.  Listen again to Michael Richards diatribe about blacks and see if you find it funny.  It is not that she was joking about Catholics but rather the way in which she did this.  There are some pretty nasty undertones.  I don't think that most Catholics would laugh along with her the way most blacks laugh along with Chris Rock when he sends up blackness. 

You should also take note of the number of people in this forum who are extremely offended by my opinions.  I get obscenities shouted at me, I get called names, I get ridiculed.  Talk about being offended (not I, them).  I honestly don't give a shit about that;  my usual reaction is just to bail on the conversation because it is rather pointless to try to have a serious discussion with someone who is screaming.  Civil debate is fun.  Getting into pissing matches is not only a waste of time but everyone gets wet and smells.

For me to be offended would give it far too much credit than it deserves for being in any way intelligent or funny.  To suggest that selling the Vatican and distributing the wealth will end world hunger is pretty moronic but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she really doesn't believe that herself.  She's only using the concept as a way of attacking the church.  To bad she couldn't come up with something better than that.

Meredith, I am with you.  There is a lot to criticize in all churches, but anti-Catholicism is still an acceptable sport in Canada and the US (and, unfortunately, in this forum).

She has a point about one thing, christians are taught to live humbly, by refernce of the bible and a certain someone dressed in a robe with little to no possesions from 2000 years ago.

I mean, how is it that the catholic church amassed the resources to own (okay build) such a thing in the first place and still say it follows its own preaching? Sure its beautiful and helps spread the word, but we all know its just a little fishy to praise the words of jesus from atop a 40 foot building (hey i don't know the measurements)

I mean, its obvious you couldn't feed the world even by selling the vatican, so it does take some direct hits at how the church doesn't practice what it preaches.

It also implies how we ourselves are to blame. like someone said before, mentioning the plasma tv sujests (i can't spell) how we are uncomfortable with seeing something altogether uncommon to us, and gives example of the level of consumersism we are at compared to the rest of the world.

I tend to mock all of the Christian denominations.  The Mormons are certainly the weirdest, just above Jehovah's Witnessess.  Baptists make for some of the best straight lines.  Anglicans are Catholic-lite.  But Catholics have amassed the most riches and the biggest hats.  It is virtually impossible not to mock them for some of the same points that Sarah Silverman makes.

Satire is a tool to bring the high and mighty down to earth.  Is it any wonder the Catholic Church is satirized as often as it is?

Well, I'm not going to comment on all the offended people above me (well this doesn't count), instead I'm going to comnment on the video.

I'm a fan of Sarah. She isn't affraid to offend anybody. Why? because she's already offended everybody and gotten away with it! I mean...there are some holes in her plan but what she said in this video is what many people think. Lots of people who see these commercials want the guilt trip to end so that they can go on with their lives and not have to look at the sad hungry faces. All the money that the Church has could feed all of Africa and then she wouldn't need to see those hungry faces and swollen stomachs. If anybody above me thought that this was an actual plan to make the sad people on tv go away is far more than I give the members of this site credit for.

Selling properties to feed the poor would be useless if there is no food to buy. People can't eat money. (well, I suppose they could eat paper money but I don't think that would be helpful)

If there is to be a serious effort to eliminate starvation there would have to be increased food production in the areas where it is needed.  This would require new solutions such as creating new farmlands in sparsely populated areas that are presently unfit for agriculture. The Antarctic ice caps are a huge source of fresh water while most deserts are in regions with adequate heat and light and no water.  Underground chambers could be built in desert regions which would contain the Antarctic ice and serve as a source of fresh water to support new farms.  The ice could be transported on ships equipped with solar panels and wind turbines to provide power and work crews could be assembled to gather the ice.  I'm convinced that it is technologically possible to do this and the only obstacles are political and economic systems.

The hierarchy of the Catholic church should be criticized but selling their buildings won't make any difference in stopping poverty.
