World Cup

Anyone following it? I noticed BB has an Italian flag for his new avatar. I am at home this afternoon and just heard people erupt in cheers from nearby apartments. What does that mean? Who's playing? My husband watches some but we don't have cable. I was concerned about some of the news surrounding the expense of the stadiums (in different cities) that may not be used again, when there is so much poverty there. I don't follow soccer. Anyone else?

I watched the first game and some of the others. Soccer is rather a nice sport, not too violent. I also watch some professional golf which I find relaxing. Lately I've taken a liking to horse racing too. California Chrome let us down. I  had a race  horse of my own in the country as a teenager.  ( when I was young Maggie).

I'm watching World Cup whether I want to or not.  My guy rented a PVR just so that he wouldn't have to miss a game.  They record all day and then we watch them (sometimes on fast forward if it's a less exciting team/game) all evening!

I do like it though.  I marvel at the distances they run!

Sorry you feel California Chrome let people down, Stardust.  He ran with an injury.  A front foot was cut and bloodied when another horse's hoof struck his out of the starting gate.

Pretty good to run the way he did with an injury.  After the race the horse was visibly limping.

While I don't watch soccer much, I do appreciate the skill involved in the sport.  Players make some amazing moves, and footwork is pretty cool.

That's so sad about Chrome. I wonder if the jockey was totally familiar with what had happened, his injury. Perhaps Chrome should not have run at all but horse racing is a tough sport and very tough for the jockeys too.

The jockey knew there was a bump but didn't know the damage until he saw blood on the horse's foot after the race.  I saw the photos and it wasn't nice.  His trainer expects Chrome won't race for a couple of months.

I love horses, so was sad that Chrome didn't get a good chance at the Crown.

"Sherman said the right front hoof that California Chrome injured during the running of the Belmont has taken more time to heal than he thought.

Sherman said he thinks the injury, which occurred right after the start of the 1 1/2 mile Belmont, may have cost California Chrome the Triple Crown.

Despite the injury — a chunk of his right hoof was lost after the colt got kicked — California Chrome only got beat 1 3/4 lengths.

“I really think so,” Sherman said. “When he took dead aim at the leaders going into the stretch, his head started going up in the air, and I said to my wife, ‘something is bugging him.’ That would be the point where he usually kicks in. I knew something wasn’t right. When that hoof gets to rubbing, it can be painful.”

Happy viewing everyone. My husband went out to watch a game this afternoon. We don't have cable so he likes to go to a friend's place or pub or Internet cafe that has comfy chairs and big headphones. He's European and World Cup was a really big deal for him growing up- like most of the rest of the world except US and Canada. Bigger that the Stanley Cup here. He's a little miffed that he's had to work and miss several games (but that's true for most people except in Brazil- I read that in Brazil lots of people are skipping work for the games.) Last year my husband told me he wanted to take his vacation time off at this time but it didn't work out that way.

Side note to stardust...good to see you posting right up to the end of WC. Hope to see you down the road. Take care all.

Yes, I'm still here.

The WC is after all a gift given to us by the United Church of Canada. We have to respect that with thanks right up to the END.
