I applied some aloe gel on a couple of scrathes on my arm (rubbed it into the surrounding area also), and within minutes there was a bright red patch where I had applied it that has faded a bit but is still there. I have never experienced an allergic reaction to aloe. This was a tube of aloe gel, with some other supposedly natural ingredients, but is supposed to be 99% aloe. I have used it lots of times before and never had a reaction. Any idea why now? Has anyone else ever had a reaction to aloe? I thought it was supoosed to soothe the skin!

My guess is that you reacted to an ingredient that wasn't aloe. I've only used pure aloe myself. I can't think of anything that could be added that would improve it. Hope you recover quickly.

Possibly the scratches were still 'open' and the gel application penetrated the wound and triggered an inflammatory response. I've only used aloe gel on skin that had no open abrasions etc. (i.e. usually sunburn!) Hopefully you're feeling better!

Hmmmmm.......I've used it on cuts, abrasions (especially on kids after bike disasters), small, but nasty burns, rashes - pretty much anything that needed 'something'. Could easily be though that different people react different ways.

You can be allergic to aloe. It's more likely you reacted to a fragrance or colouring though, those are frequently added in small amounts. Aloe gel also sometimes has pain killers added.

I recommend getting an actual aloe plant - then you'll know there's nothing added to the aloe that you could possibly be allergic to!

I figured that might have been it, because I have used it as a mositurizer (the same stuff) will no ill effects. However, I seem to remember putting aloe gel on cuts before (it's a familiar brand that I buy), maybe these were still too new. I just noticed them there this morning puzzled as to how they got there, and I had aloe gel in the bathroom, so I figued it would help. I think they are just a couple of shallow scratches from one of my rings or something I just didn't notice doing at the time.. Anyway, they aren't very deep, but I guess aloe wasn't the best thing to put on them. In any event, my friend came over earlier tonight sporting a nasty sunburn, and she used some with no reaction ( I did warn her just in case), and she found it helpful, so I gave it to her.
My rash has faded, it never got too serious, but the scratches are still there. Thanks for your thoughts.

My Mom reacts to aloe, she gets a rash from using the juice fresh from the leaves.
