Anxiety Sore Throat?

Is there such a thing? Anybody here get a sore throat from feeling anxious or tense?

When I feel like I've been at the computer too long, or not done enough work, or just general worrying about something else, the past couple weeks, I've been getting like an acidy feeling in my throat, not quite heart burn as there's no burning in my chest, though it does sometimes accompany a full feeling, like I've had too much to eat. But it does feel like stomach acid maybe has risen there. Is that possible? I wake up in the mornign feeling normal, then by around 10 or 11 am, the throat thing is there. And it seems to come and go depending on how settled my nerves are . It usually goes away in the evening. But then last night I woke up from some tense dreams and had it. I was a little distressed to think it was there in the night, and wondered which came first, the stomach acid and incesant swallowing, or the tense dreams? There's nothing in my BC Health guide, but I have found other people online saying they get that from tension.

Anybody here get that or heard of it?

I've never experienced that Elanorgold.  Hope you figure out what is causing it and how to prevent it from happening.

Could be possible, IMO.  Google GERD - it can sometimes present with the symptoms you describe, without severe heartburn.  If it continues tho, might be worth a chat with your doc.  Hopefully you find some ways to relieve it soon!

when my boyfriend was in afghanistan I experienced lots of anxiety and worry, and stress levels were very high. I was also in my first year of university and I am the type that I get so stressed taht sometimes I would actually get stomach sick because of worry. I talked to my doctor and he said the acid reflux and stomach sickness were due to stress. I started to exercise more to help with stress and when my boyfriend returned my stress wasn't nearly as bad. He gave me a prescription for the acid that I took in the morning and would help me for the entire day. I would recommend talking to your doc about that :)  It's reallly amazing how much mental stress can affect your phsyical health!

Is it a feeling of being "veklempt (sp.?)" sort of that wee bit sore and tight feeling you get in your throat when fighting back tears? Or, a feeling of your stomach being clenched like you're holding your breath from your diaphram (which you might be if not relaxed). Or, a feeling like a big piece of food got stuck going down and it is still stuck there?

If any of the above, I get them all from time to time, and for me it is stress and anxiety that brings on that sort of thing, and staying awake worrying about it can make it even more uncomfortable-- and could be acid reflux--which is something to check out because it can get worse. It got very painful for me...in my stomach. I thought I had an ulcer (could be that too which is totally treatable), and it turned I had bad acid reflux--once I got a tight sore feeling in my chest area rlated to the same thing that kept me awake and very worried (if that happens go  to the hospital just in case--that's what I did--it turned out to be part of the acid reflux, but better to be safe) and I took meds for the problem for a period of time also.

Another thing you might want to try are some deep breathing exercises and see if that helps, but if it persists, I'd see a doctor.

No, not verklempt, more like what Wesoly experienced. It makes me mad that I can't control my thoughts better for my health's sake, seeing as I know my thoughts cause it. Likewise, I find exersize, and time set aside where I am not expected to work, helps. Was is a stomach acid preventor Wesoly, like Pepcid? I've been taking Tums here and there, alternating with Fisherman's Friend. It does feel like my throat is tight, like in fear, which isn't the right response, because I am in no imminent danger. I also get cold sweats and tense shoulders. I wish there was a pill for stress! A good job would work!

Elanorgold,

It was more for prevention, not like something you would take like tums when you feel the symptoms coming on. I took it in the morning and it would last for the day sort of thing. I didnt finish the entire thing as I found stress relievers helped a lot and I'm not much of a pill-popper. I can't find the old bottle or else I would tell you what the name ot if was, definitely talk to your doctor he/she will be able to help!

I have a hiatus hernia which flares up now and then, probably brought on by stress and too much coffee.  My Dr. gave me a prescription which made it worse. Then I discussed some remedies that might help with my Nurse Practitioner, and the one that does help is apple cider vinegar.  I put a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and sip before meals.  It has really helped to relieve the acid reflux.

What I took was perscription strength Pepcid...the same drug but higher concentration. I can't remember the pharmeceutical name, but it was a different name, same medicine in it. Tums didn't help much for me.

There are pills for stress/ anxiety...like chlorazapam. I've been prescibed those too, but wouldn't recommend it if you can find a good natural alternative to eliminating and fighting stress--as the pills are addictive and they make you a little bit spaced out. Harder to concentrate/ remember things I found. I didn't like it.. A good job might indeed work!  I hear you.;)  Exercise does help. It counters the fight or flight thing with endorphins (as I type this, I realize i should be getting more myself). How about meditation?

If you're interested - check out the Relaxation Response Institute - www.elibay.com - he's been in the stress mgmt biz (corporate trainer & personal level classes) for decades & has some great MP3 files you can download for a small fee or order CDs (and just to be clear - I have NO connection to the site).  As a therapist, I often recommend these resources.  He has an amazing voice!

Ah Gecko, My Mom uses the apple cider vinegar for her heartburn.

LOL, I've been recommended meditation and yoga several times. I know, I should meditate. In the summer I feel that my laying outside each day constitutes meditation of a sorts, and it really helps with stress and mood. ANd I think I'll look for a yoga "how to" video at the library...

I asked a doctor once about an anti anxiety pill, and he said there was nothing that wasn't addictive, and recommended meditation. I bet there's somethign herbal though... I mean, legal herbal! Heavens I'm forgetful enough as it is!

Sounds good Carolla, I'll look into it.

I'm pleased to report, I have had no upset stomach or sore throat today, yay! I avoided acid foods, well except I did give in to one small pickle, and I did lots of work. I think the new cola is bad for my stomach... I hear you can disolve tooth enamel in cola, soaked for 24 hours.

Cola (even without the rum!) - bad for so many things!  including your bones, I think.

Not to mention the sugar/sweeteners ... yuck!!

I tried to make natural cola once, sarsaparilla, sassafrass, passionflower, aniseed, licorice root, cinnamon, lemongrass and vanilla boiled up in a pot and cooled, with carbonated water added. It smelled a lot like cola, but of cource wasn't sweet, or dark brown... Blue Sky company make a natural one that's good. I buy pop as a treat once in a while. I suspect ginger ale might be good for upset stomach though... the real ginger ones.

There are a couple of herbal things I've tried. One is called Holy Basil or Tulsi (it's said to have grown around Christ's tomb, but of course I don't know if that's true...it's very popular in India. A woman I used to work with used it a lot and said it's good for many thngs, including respiratory problems and immune system as well as anxiety). You might want to read up about it. It's pretty interesting. It's a variety of basil leaf, not the same as in food...you can buy it in capsules, tincture and in tea from health food stores. I found it helped a bit. I liked the tea anyway, it's relaxing...and the one I bought came in different natural fruit flavours. Speaking of, I should get some.

Another is valerian root...I bought a sleepytime variety with hops in it. It worked for me, it did make me sleepy, but  you should check out the risks because even herbal things have risks.

And I did buy some "Chill Pills"  once, containing a bunch of anti anxiety herbs in them. I don't think it worked. When i first took it I thought maybe it did, but could have been a placebo effect. I think I got sucked in by the marketing. It's a cute name. I was thinking to myself "Do I ever need to take a chill pill!" ;)

Hi Elanorgold:

The headline of this thread grabbed my attention.

My wife had GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) for years. It is general, non-specific anxiety and causes the typical anxiety symptoms, one of them is acid reflux, which is what you describe. Her throat also feels constricted at times.

Because of the anxious feelings that anxious thinking causes, the body prepares for "fight or flight" and reacts with the typical "fight or flight" responses such as excessive stomach acid, excessive bile production, rapid breath and heartbeat, and blood flowing from the extremeties to the body core, leaving the extremeties feeling cold.

The thing to do to prevent this is not to think anxiously, but this is easier said than done. Deep relaxation, meditation and self-hypnosis can help. There are many videos on this on youtube, some of them better than others. Find some that suit you and listen to them repeatedly.

"HOW YOUR MIND CAN HEAL YOUR BODY" by David R. Hamilton is a book I would recommend. There also are several videos by David R. Hamilton on youtube. He is well known in the UK and Europe, but just becoming known here in North America.

Good luck and good health!

Hi Elanorgold...my weak spot is my throat and if I get overtired, stressed or not eating properly I get a sore throat.  The family farm is experiencing more than a little stress these days and guided meditation on my mp3 has been a real help.

Another thing that I found helpful was instead of tensing my body against worrrisome thoughts, I say yes and let them pass through me....I can't remember where I read that but the idea is to see yourself as invisible with nothing to stop and hold on to the thoughts...just watch them pass through and wish them well on their way.

Thanks for the link, Corolla...I'll give it a look!

Hmm, haven't heard of Tulsi. I definately know Valerian, and it's stink that gets into everything and the foul, bitter taste! I hadn't thought of using it for anxiety. I guess I haven't thuoght of using it at all for ages!

Thanks Arminius. I'll look Hamilton up. The sad thing is that 10 years ago I laughed at the very thought of stressed people. Stress? What's that? That's for other people! People who can't control themselves and their lives. If only I could be that me again. The relaxed, content, innocent, happy, stress free me. I can, I can! I hope...

My throat has been pretty good lately, so that's good.

Hmmm, that sounds nice Penny, the Yes thought. I like that. Acceptance, surrender... knowing your innocence, tuning into the bigger picture...

I should have all this down pat. A bit embarassing. blush

All Doctors should be taught in this. I know it to be true.

It must be a funny thing to be a doctor and know that it's the patients thoughts, as much or more than the treatments, that make them better. ANd if they don't know that, they should.  How many times I've felt better just because I've seen the doctor, and felt looked after. Sometimes even sitting in the waiting room can make me begin to feel better, becuase I know I'm doing somethign about it and I'm about to see him. No wonder doctors eminate power!

I saw the witch doctor, he told me what to do, and he said, Ooo eee ooo ah ah, ting tang walla walla bing bang! Lol!
