Breast cancer in Uganda

Here in North America, there seems to be pretty good awareness of breast cancer & quite a lot of funded support.  But this article from New York Times about Uganda was an eye-opener for me.  Still lots of stigma, poor information,  few diagnostic & treatment resources (less surprising, but sad), a significant cause of death for women of all ages.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/16/health/uganda-fights-stigma-and-poverty-to-take-on-breast-cancer.html?_r=0

I was curious about the support organization mentionned - here's a link to their website too -

http://uwocaso.org.ug/   I admire the women in their determination.

Sometimes, for me at least, the blessings we have simply by living in Canada slip from awareness, and articles such as this shake me back to this realization.  I wonder if any Canadian organizations are actively supporting movements such as this?  Anybody know?

Seems like a good response to some of the breast cancer 'awareness' memes that go around on fb.  I haven't seen the one for this year yet though, my fb friends have smartened up I guess.

Carolla, it's a PM sent to females only, and a confusing FB status to those not in on the 'awareness'.  Here's an example:

Okay ladies, it’s that time of year again…support of Breast Cancer Awareness!! So we all remember last year’s game of writing your bra color as your status? Or the way we like to have our handbag handy? Last year, so many people took part that it made national news and the constant updating of status reminded everyone why we’re doing this and helped raise awareness!! Do NOT tell any males what the statuses mean…keep them guessing!! And please copy and paste (in a message) this to all your female friends! The idea is to choose the month you were born and the day you were born. Pass this on to the GIRLS ONLY and lets see how far it reaches around. The last one about the bra went around all over the world. Your status should say: “I am going to________________for___________ months.” Use your birth month for the place you’ll live. Use the day you were born for how many months you will live there.
January--Mexico
February-- London
March--Miami
April--Dominican Republic
May--France
June-- St Petersburg
July--Austria
August--Germany
September--New York
October--Amsterdam
November-- Las Vegas
December-- Columbia
Please post this as YOUR STATUS!! Do NOT reply to this message!

Okay - I've seen those fb things.  Just not quite making the connection to Uganda ... are you suggesting that many here in North America make light of the issue of awareness of breast cancer?  Or perhaps that such awareness months have become a joke to some?

There is no need to spread breast cancer awareness in North America.  The memes are useless at best, and are sometimes harmful.  They aren't giving any more information other than the fact that breast cancer exists.

If people are honestly interested in spreading awareness, there are places that could use it, as this article shows.
