Great news I think:
http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/parents-with-sick-kids-can-make-ei-claims-harper-1.906482
There was some arguing about EI and whether it should just be 'insurance'. I think we can all agree that this is a step in the right direction!

I either hadn't heard of this or wasn't paying attention to it before. I'm unsure if the details are laid out yet, but if someone knows of a link with more info please share!

I think that this is a good thing - a parent is put into a position where s/he is unable to work because of a child's serious illness, so s/he applies for and collects employment insurance -- the same as if s/he were ill herself. Good plan.
Also good pre-election planning. Who could possibly be against enabling a parent to be with a sick child - possibly a dying child? It sure makes the government look good, compassionate, caring.
Yet this is the same government that is cutting benefits to thousands of seasonal workers, many of them parents.
Cut one group - give to another. I don't have the stats but I would imagine that the government will save a lot more in cutting benefits to seasonal workers than in granting benefits to parents of sick kids.

Hopefully it will make things a little less stressful for your family Chansen. I don't think it comes into effect until 2013 though.
