Explorations: How do we know what we know

How do we know what we know?

What helps us?  What hinders us?  What is this thing called Truth?

I start this thread especially for fellow WCers chansen and Berserk.  Anyone else is, of course, encouraged to join in.

This thread is an attempt for us to discuss these very important things, like how do we know what we know.

I suggest that everyone participating try to put themselves into 'full on learn mode' and try not to assume as much as possible (try to, if you can, act as if you don't know but are in the process of investigating what you, and others here, know).

Ready! Set! Go!

To start you off, let us start with something relatively simple:  How do you know that the Earth revolves around the Sun?

We don't. At least most people who are not scientists don't. We just believe that what was taught to us is true.

Remember those movies that are about people thinking their life is real, but in truth they are all living in a big computer animated reality?

If I had a reason to be skepical about this, or was just curious, I could always learn and make observations over time and confirm this for myself.

Don't be such a coward :3  How do you know that the Earth revolves around the Sun?  Ideally, what I would like to see is an exploration by you and Berserk into the Earth revolving around the Sun.

This thread is an invitation to those of us who are still vitally alive and curious, who aren't afraid to try to figure out how they know the Earth revolves around the Sun.

What is there to discuss?  It makes sense, it has been observed, and if I want to, I could grab a telescope and observe it for myself, in exactly the same way that we can't observe any gods.

Well, it's a consequence of Newton gravitational theory. The sun, being so massive, is the dominant gravitational influence on the earth. The moon can produce similar tidal forces as the sun because it is so much closer (tidal forces drop off with the inverse cube of distance), but its affect on the Earth's orbit is only to introduce a monthly wobble.

Another reason is that the observed parallax of nearby stars. If we got the length of the baseline for the parallax measurements (e.g. the diameter of the Earth's orbit) wrong, we would calculate incorrect distance to the nearby stars. Based on the distances we would predict incorrect brightnesses for these stars, and incorrect sizes for the images of the stars. (It is possible to resolve the disks of large, close stars through interferometry techniques.)

Interesting. How do I know what I know. I think everything I know is relative to my experience. I am a product of my experiences. One of my experiences is seeing the sun rise and set every day. Another of my experiences is watching several documentaries about astronomy, and learning how Copernicus claimed through observation that the earth went around the sun, then later how Galileo proved it by making careful observations through his telescope. I see no reason to think that is not true. I trust that the scientists have equasions that prove it, that I could also learn if I wanted to.
