I have been dealing with some pretty debilitating digestive tract and digestive issues the last couple of months. I have been doing a lot of reading, research, and experimenting as I work towards healing.
One of the things I came across was food combining eating where you don't eat proteins and starch at the same meal, and you always eat fruit by itself.
Has anyone tried this? Does anyone live this? What has your experience been?
I am trying to repair my digestive tract . . . and so am trying to work hard to eat the best foods at the beginning of the digestion process. I am also taking Black Walnut capsules and Licorice Solid Extract and a probiotic.
And now . . . food combining . . . I have only been doing it for one week, so I'm not sure how it is helping, if at all.
Any others have any success with food combining?

I know someone who said they got bad gas if they ate carbs and protein at the same time, so they avoided doing so.
I know some nutrients are better absorbed with certain things. Ie. fats with some vitamins, acids with others, and other things can inhibit.
Beyond that, I haven't heard of this before.

I havene't heard of this either, but I was wondering if when you do try something different, do you give it enough time to see a different outcome. Alot of time it takes months to see some results if there is going to be any. Often it takes time and it isn't instant. The body needs time to adjust to new things. What is the longest you've tried something?

For the past three months I have been eating more of an alkaline diet as my doctor attributed my GI problems to an acidic stomach. While I'm sure it helped in many ways it hasn't alleviated my issues with digestion. I thought I would continue with the more alkaline way of eating but try the food combining theory to see if it helps with my digestive issues. It has only been a little over a week since I've started that. I agree that healing takes a long time. So I will just keep at it and see what happens.

I've read a bit of stuff about the acid/alkaline debate - a fair bit of the science suggests that really, what goes into the stomach doesn't in the end influence the overall acid/base balance of the body, which I found interesting. They body is so complex and amazing!
Beloved, have you read or seen any of the vids by Dr. Mark Hyman - they're quite interesting re getting to the source of the myriad of medical symptoms that present themselves today.

I will check that out carolla, thank you.
Re: acid/alkaline . . . I've read arguments for both sides - some say what you eat makes a difference, others say not - it's so confusing :)

Some of the acit/alkaline diets aren't based on science. For example, citrus fruits are acidic, but some of the diets consider them to be alkaline.

Sure is confusing Beloved! That is a certainty!

I have lost about half of my liver function, and had digestive problems because of that. I now eat a fairly large bowl of mixed fruit for breakfast every day. This seems to stabilize my digestive tract.
Also, I would say that cultivating a serene mind helps with just about any physical ailment.

chemgal . . . I think it is because citrus fruits are acidic in nature, but when they are eaten they become alkaline forming.

How?
Even if that is the case, in the stomach they are certainly acidic, and that's the concern with acid reflux.

I don't know - somehow it changes when it is ingested - there are a few foods that are like this - can't think of them offhand - but I know lemons are one. I will have to google it.

Beloved...ran across a quote this week that said something to the effect of it isn't what you eat, but what you digest that is important.
I've been taken off all major starches (grain, potatoes, corn) and that has made a big difference for me. So I eat fruits, veggies, meat or eggs...I can also eat flaxseed.
Hope you feel better soon.

Yes, I agree BethAnne, as I've discovered most of my issues are in the digestion (small intestine/pancreas related) and absoprtion (severe Vitamin D deficiency, huge weight loss, undigested food). Wow, I didn't realize what a wonderful job my body does when it is working properly . . . and how much it affects you when it is not working.
I am off all grains too - and also dairy and beef. I also eat lots of veggies and fruit, eggs I have to limit to one every four days (it's the egg white I have to have in moderation).
I hope you feel better soon too :).

I've started with the bowl of fruit in the morning also Arminius - I'm hoping for stabilization also.
I am trying to cultivate a serene mind - I am meditating and I am trying to monitor and adjust my thoughts. I'm trying not to futurize, and I'm trying to not be negative. And I'm trying not to worry about things. Challenging for me.

I have never worked so hard at anything in my life as I have these last four months to try and get better. I keep telling my hubby that I at least deserve an A+ for effort. I have to believe that everything I am doing is going to pay off in the long run.
I am feeling better this week than I did last week - so at least I am see a small improvement :). I long for good health to be restored.

I thought that someone had mentioned this already, Beloved, but I don't see reference to it in this thread. I picked up Alive Magazine at my local health food store and it had an interesting article about combining foods. I don't know if there is anything there that will be useful to you, but it's a good read all the same.
