I thought I would start a thread about online mental health resources and anything else anyone finds useful about mental health to post here. Soemtimes, it can be difficult to know how to support someone here who may be experiencing a mental health issue, so I thought it would be good to start an ongoing discussion/ resource bank here for people to check out at their own leisure. Any other ideas?

http://www.mentalhealthforum.net/getting-help/ this site aims to be the "friendliest" online forum on the internet.. It's a UK site, but I followed a link they provided to this list of help-lines/ call in crisis phone lines:

Great idea Kimmio!
Here's a great website that I know of that caters to youth and young adults with mental health problems: www.mindcheck.ca. It was created by several agencies in the Lower Mainland and sponsored by the Vancouver Canucks in memory of a Canuck, Rick Rypien, who committed suicide last summer. They have links that people from anywhere in Canada could benefit from.

This book looks very intersting, called Faith and Mental Health. Religious Resources for Healing, by Harold G. Koenig, M.D. I skimmed through the preview (google preview button on left side underneath book cover image). There's a bit of history about how different faiths have traditonally, and do today, look at mental illness and treatment.

One of the best sites I've found - and from which I often print info for my clients - is

Hi Kimmio - I have a good list - but it's at work & I'm at home ... will see if I can remember to bring it home & share some; there are a few good sites for young adults that focus on cognitive behavioural therapy methods, which are well recommended.

I have heard there is a web site for cognitive therapy. Which seems odd to me because I know when I was working witha counsellor using cognitve stuff a website would not have worked for me.

I agree GordW - an 'in person' therapist is often most effective - but for some folks not affordable, or accessible perhaps. On the other hand, many teens and young adults are so comfortable in an on-line environment that it's their first choice for exploring issues, and there are some pretty good sites out there - and lots of crap!
