Does anyone use SAD lamps?

Can you tell me your experience with them?

I bought one last winter and I used it a few times, but I found it gave me a headache so I stopped using it.

my mother in law has one, she doesn't get much relief from it.

i think excercise is still your best bet.

Having just reviewed a bunch of articles on SAD lights for work-they are effective in 60-80% of clinicically identified SAD cases, when used correctly. That's a high effectiveness rate. It''s even being used in other depressions now.

Yes Mists of Spring, headaches can be a side effect.

I just bought a dawn emulator SAD light for my 16 year old. After exam week we will set it so it goes on over a 1/2 hour in the mornings to help him gradually wake up and get going.

The hope is to wean him off his anti-depressant at March break.

Now he does not have SAD. He has chronic fatigue -held over from his mono-like illness-with an overlay of depression from watching his dad die of cancer-in 7 months.

Zoloft was prescribed in June and works! DPysiatrst had sid to wean off it March or June when there are no school demands.

This school term has been the best in 2 years.. All courses are caught up and will be passed.

And spring.early summer is a good time too - increasing daylight & activity - our season of hibernation and worldly withdrawal coming to a close!  At least I do notice that for myself.

Wow, Tabitha, what a lot for a 16 year old to have to deal with - hope he continues on the path of good health day by day.

My Mom had one but I think the cat got more out of it than she did.   Every time my Mom turned the lamp on the cat would sung up to it and start purring and licking the glass plate covering the bulb...

I had one that I gave to my son. He doesn't use it and I just wasn't diligent with it, although it was recommended my my psychiatrist.

I take medication to get me through the lows of fall/winter and the irritation and sleeplessness of spring and summer, and I'm pleased with the results.

I sometimes wish I could just roll with the seasons. For some reason it seems like natural rhythm to hibernate in winter and have lots of energy during the longer days. Unfortunately, modern life gets in the way.....

There are lots of people, though for whom it's an effective treatment if properly used. Good luck to your son, Tabitha.

SAD lamps do work out here on the west coast and in the north, people use them.

Having said that, I must say that we had been using one for a few years, my partner suffers SAD quite a lot. . .  but he is now acclimatizing to the west coast a little more ( it's been ten years) so that he knows to get outside as much as possible - as soon as he gets home from work until it is dark, and to either chop wood or do yard work  - excercise - while being outdoors.

When we were on the prairies I excercised a lot at the gym and also rode my bike all winter ( studded tires are great fun and it is exhilirating to ride in winter).  My partner was big into x-country skiing.
