I went to a presentation at work today & learned about this very worthwhile organization - Seniors In Need. (note - I have no other connection to the organization)
As we know, many Canadian seniors live in very tight financial situations, many in poverty, and have no 'extra' cash for items or services that can make the difference between living successfully at home or being institutionalized. This oganization/website http://www.seniorsinneed.ca is a way of connecting those who in need with those who would like to donate - often anonymously - through vetted community service agencies.
It's Canada wide - so thought my wondercafe friends might also find it interesting to know about.

This looks pretty good. I'll save the link. Maybe I can help somebody ...pay back time when my parts slip neatly into their sockets again.
You may be aware that CCAC - sp- is having difficulty meeting all of the demands from the elderly being placed upon them. When I was in hosp. a son was bringing his Mom to be assessed for free home health care. She couldn't get up the stairs and she needed females to help her bathe, 3 sons in the family. I wondered why she couldn't have her bed moved downstairs?
She was waltzing around pretty fast with a walker. I talked to him. I think I forgot to mention that a weekly bath has always been available if somebody needs it? Correct?
Seniors helping needy seniors is a really good thing, a nice idea if the seniors aren't too afraid to open their doors to strangers. There have been scams even among personal support workers walking off with people's Visa cards etc. Oh...you said the people who are helping are vetted, criminal checks done . That's good.
You know the old joke....How many people does it take to change a light bulb? I need a small army. We have some of the new low energy fixtures put in place by our highrise along with light bulbs .My family isn't the best, we can't get the shades off. The bulbs didn't break but the mercury inside is very dangerous if they do. I'll get the super.
Regular bulbs have broken off inside my fan dining light as well as in the hall and in the foyer. I can't get my bedroom fan light going...remote control. Kitchen new energy light is half out.
Oh..... these fandangled things! I'm so foolish I decided somebody must have put a spell on me.....:)...so I have a small bowl of sage to chase away the evil spirits. I don't have the sage leaves. Maybe my dream catcher will work?
I'm sure this is everything you needed to hear!

Stardust - I think you're starting to sound like an Occupational Therapist with that problem solving about moving the bed downstairs! Perhaps that had been done, but the bathtub remained upstairs? They're a lot harder to move .
Regarding CCAC (Community Care Access Centre - formerly known as HomeCare) providing assistance for bathing. CCACs are organized through the local LHINs (Local Health Integration Network) and they differ in their policies and funding. So what is available in one area is not necessarily available in another. That being said, yes, demand is growing as our population ages, and budgets are always tight - getting tighter. The government funded system seems to supply less and less as time goes by.
Changing lightbulbs! It would be so great to have a "lightbulb & smoke detector battery patrol" go through neighbourhoods - just to check & change as needed! It would stop folks from climbing unsteadily onto chairs to do these tasks, then falling & breaking hips!! or arms!! or worse!! So yes - promise me you'll call the super!!

Back to Seniors In Need - I think it might be put to good use by a group, class, etc that wants to do a small fundraiser & make a difference to someone in their own community - or farther afield. Or just a generous benefactor - I know there are many out there.
But when I reviewed their site - I see that some requests are also for drivers, yard care, meal prep assistance, somebody to take out the trash to the curb every week ... not just financial.

I don't know if its getting set up perfectly yet but it has been suggested in Ont. that the Seniors Centers should be able to supply more health benefits which would mean less dr. or hospital care. The Center near me is very good. They supply eye check-ups, foot check-ups,diabetes check ups, blood pressure, lots of positive speakers about aging, alzheimers etc. They have quizzes to keep people's minds on the ball. I've been there when they have their singing concerts every Wed. and on some other occasions. At one event two women were dancing.... making merry.... tripped and fell down. I was taking a video... it was a very hard fall...I don't know if they are O.K...it was awhile ago. I'll post it...scary.
This center is comprised of mostly Russian Jewish who don't speak a lot of English. Its a hard language to learn. They are so grateful to Canada for senior housing and everything they are given. Some had very hard lives coming from Siberia etc. They toilet trained their babies very young because they had no diapers. Imagine that!

What good is a thread without some entertainment?.....I'm here. I take videos as a hobby, short ones, amateur. These people are mostly in their 80's and up with ill health . I must say the Jewish people sure have a zest for life. I admire it greatly. They're singing like there's no tomorrow. They love ball room dancing and having fun. I haven't been here in awhile but I'm a runner....I go everywhere I can to enjoy life and enjoy people. Whatever would we do without people...?
I'm not in the videos because I'm taking them. I like them for souvenirs.
