Vitamin Deficiencies

I'm getting a little frustrated, this morning I woke up with a chapped area at the corner of my mouth and later on I realized I had it to a lesser extent on the other side.

I know this can be the sign of a deficiency, but there's a few that can cause this and I don't know which one.  Since it's been recommended I get my weight down to the lower side of the healthy range because of some medical problems I've been having, I have been eating well.

I'm already taking supplements - B12 and D because I've been deficient in the past.  They were sufficient before, but I got my latest D results back, and even with the supplements they are low.  Those results take months though, so I don't know how much of an effect all the bright sunny days have made on my levels.

I really don't want to start adding in random supplements when I'm not even sure if I need them, especially as I still have tests scheduled.  I don't want to make an appointment for this either, as I've been to the doctor so many times and I have another appointment in a few weeks.

Hopefully it's just a bit of dehydration and will go away on it's own.  I just don't understand why I'm having deficiencies now.

Sorry, this ended up being a bit of a vent.

Feel free to discuss any nutrient deficiency issues.

If anyone has any suggestions for getting rid of the chapped area (I'm pretty sure it is this):

Please share!  I find it difficult as it gets into the skin and stuff for lips tends to make my skin break out which will just make the problem worse.

It's a long shot, but did you eat fresh pineapple?
It has enzymes that do that to the corners of your mouth.

Oh, good call ninjafaery!  I had some earlier in the week.  It would be odd for it to take days for it to show up, but I'm willing to go with that combined with maybe getting a little too dehydrated a few days later.  That's enough to keep me from worrying about it until my next appointment.  Thanks!

All of these tests have me a little paranoid!

That's interesting ninja - I had some great fresh pineapple recently, and after a few bites my tongue felt really over sensitized and painful!  Maybe that was the cause.  Boo - I love pineapple!

Dehydration is a good theory too - especially in the summer weather!  More fluids for you chemgal!   And stress is never great for the skin/body - so quitting the worrying should also be a good move yes

Interesting question tho - and there are lots of conditions that can be related to too little, and too much intake of various vitamins & supplements.

Regarding vitamin d definciency which is a big issue in sun deprived areas like Canada. Some doctors are recommending sun lamps, as oral supplements are not working for many. Howevr you need to use sun lamps that stimulated Vitamin D, not the kind used for tanning and cause health problems or cancer. I have taken vitamin d for years as low level of it have been linked to many different problems. however even taking the regular dose My blood work still shows that i have low levels. So this summer i am getting extra sun and will be buying a lamp after September, and have had time to investigate the market for uvb lamps..

It's been clearing up, so I've stopped thinking about it, for now.  I will mention it when I see the doctor though!

Alex, that's interesting about the lamp.  Do you still take supplements?  I know people who are taking high doses of vitamin D just to be at a healthy level.  The problem with just the UV exposure is that you still need enough of the compound that gets converted to vitamin D.  Some people (includng news articles I've read) say that we absorb vitamin D from the sun - not true!!!

Here are two excellent sources of information on Vitamin that I would recommend.

The Vitamin D Society  - which is Canadian

The Vitamin D Council - which is American
