graduation gr 12

I went grad dress shopping with my daughter today and we got her grad. dress. My first choice would have been the long white one with small black print but her first choice was cocktail length and black with lace peekaboos. Very cute

Sounds like fun Tabitha!   I think the shorter length is more popular now.  Is this for what we formerly called "the prom"?  or is it for graduation ceremony?

When my unconventional daughter went to her grad prom, she wore a wonderful sleek, slim cut, full length Chinese silk dress, sleeveless with a little stand-up collar - hair in an updo with ebony & red chopsticks sticking out!  She looked amazing.

Tabitha;

Thank-you for sharing one your mommy moments with us.  Shopping for the grade 12 grad dress is a big one.

I shopped with my Dad for my dress because he is a tailor.  I could not find anything I liked so he sewed me one.

That's sweet Serena - can you tell us about your dress?

My mom sewed mine - but that was SOOO many years ago ... it was the norm to sew our prom dresses then.  I remember it well - a fresh floral, scoop neck, with lime green velvet ribbon at the empire waistline! I loved it.  Not only that ... a romantic green full length hooded cape to go with!   The cape went long ago to the costume department at Camp Tawingo ... I know not where the dress disappeared to!

Whatever does Prom stand for/mean?  Is is short for "Promotion?" LOL

What a good question Omni!  I had no idea ... but ... Wikipedia (the font of all knowledge!  hahah) says ... "a prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance, or gathering of high school students. It is typically held at the end of junior and/or senior year."  So now we know!  On with the promenade!

A momentous occasion, Tabitha.  Although you preferred the white one, I'm glad that you approve and are pleased with her choice.  An exciting time and an exciting event.  Enjoy this time to the fullest.

Yes-once we narrowed it down to 3 we could both live with-style and price-then she got to choose.

This is for the dinner and dance that happen the day after the commencement-getting the actual diploma.

Both events happen in may and then June is for final exams.

I'd love to.  If it was earlier I would take a picture down to the stationers and scan it.

It was black with a bright pink jacket.  The jacket had pink polk a dots and I had matching shoes made too.

Congratulations on your daughter's graduation.  I couldn't have been more pleased than I was when my children graduated.  I remember helping my daughter shop for her dress.  It was pink, with puffs, and billows, and the hem of the skirt scalloped and gathered up with bows, over a longer underskirt.

My son didn't go to his graduation prom.  He was a young 17,  just starting to get interested in girls and not yet into formal dating.  Two years later he attended several graduations at area high schools as girls invited him to be their date.  He went to his sister's grad as her best friend's date and although he had treated her like a kid sister over the years, for that big night he bought her a coursage (sp), and took her out to a fancy restaurant for dinner before the dance.

Mmmm ... styling Serena!  I had forgotten about dyed shoes ... I had those too, but mine were naturally .... bright green!  Sheesh!   Makes me laugh now thinking about it, but WOW, it was fantastic at the time

Tabitha ... I love your "narrowed it down to 3 we could both live with" comment ... indeed ... it can be a challenge sometimes!  You did really well I think to accomplish your goal in just one afternoon of shopping!

My Mom got fed up with my indecisiveness and choosyness when we looked for my grad dress. I had also left it too long and all the long dresses my size were gone so I had to wear a short dress. I was dissapointed. Mom was just relieved I finaly chose something. Ho hum.

But I got a gorgeous, long, red, bias cut dress for a friend's wedding when I was 19. I had a fab updo, and black lace shawl. No date for that either. Boo hoo! Oh woe is me!

My grad dress was long, off-white India cotton with long sleeves and ruffles and I loved it,

Wore it the next year at UBC to the Engineer's Ball.

I loved to grad/prom dress shopping. I went with one of my friends and my mom and made it a day trip to Toronto. I really liked one in the first store but decided to keep looking just in case. In the last store we went to before I was going to go back and take the first one I found one I fell in love with.

It was cocktail length (which is more common lately) in a muted seashell green colour. Haltar collar that was folded kind of like a suit collar and ended up in a  square neckline. I loved it!

And the guys are welcome to post as well.

Anyone owning up to a powder blue suit? or?

For my son who graduated gr.12 two years ago I bought a Calvin Klein navy pinstripe suit at a clearance outlet in Vegas-It fit-and still fits and he was dashing (same suit was for sale here for over $100 more)

Oh dear, dare I confess... Please forgive me, for I have sinned, it was the 80's.... at the promenade,,,,a mullet with the short sides, long back and the top being " the big hair"... clothing was a black pinstriped grey with narrow leather tie and vest (no cumberbund) with well used Marten's on my feet.

I am graduating this year and I already bought my prom dress

I originally tried it on as my dress I was to model for our Prom Fashion Show (a fundraiser) but I put it on and was like wow I was to buy this! So ended up the first prom dress I ever tried on was the one I bought. It is a ballroom style gown in Navy blue. The top is tight down to my hips then it's a full tule skirt. It also has little sequins in amongst the tule and on the top. I'm a little in love with it..... although it was a little pricy I just couldn't help myself (600$ later..... )

Oooo puppypaws ...  I see an elegant princess!  Sounds beautiful.  And good shopping - no dragging your mom around for days on end!!

LOL StevieG - I remember mullets!   You were a picture of elegance I'm sure .... right down to the Doc Martens!   At least you wore leather shoes - when my daughter's bf picked her up, he was wearing running shoes with his suit!  Most young guys today don't actually have real leather dress shoes I suppose!

Glad you have the dress puppypaws-enjoy

Prom dresses can be expensive, we limited our search to those $250 and under and the actual one was just under $200.

Since the guys were invited to comment...

I had a pretty basic black tux with a blue vest.  I didn't like it.  It was a pretty small size, but it was still swimming on me.  (This is a few years before I became truly comfortable with my size... I am very slim... like so slim people ask if I have an eating disorder... I don't.)

Anyway, now that I'm comfortable with my size, I would rock a slim-fit tux.  But, sadly, my prom days are over.

Ah, YouthWorker, you do not have to be going to prom to wear a tux. There are formal events all the time or calls to dress to the nines. There are police and firefighter balls. There are Christmas parties... Then again, I am the dressy type when I have to dress up. It gets points, well at least with one lady....

At home it is jeans and a sweatshirt, but church or dinner out (not fast food) and I am in dress pants and a dress shirt or a suit complete with a tie.

Carolla, I always wear dress shoes if I want to look "polished", even with jeans.
