Never underestimate the little things you do

It may not seem much at the time, but children remember the little things that you do for them.  I was reminded of this yesterday when my daughter told me that she had picked up a kit for dying Easter eggs and planned to do it this weekend with her kids.

"I remember that time when you died the eggs for my brother and me.  We got up Easter morning and there on the table was a basket of coloured eggs.  I was fastinated.  How did it happen?  Where did all those colours come from?  I remember we ate our breakfast eggs right away, before looking for the chocolate and jellybeans.  I still remember."

I really don't myself.  It must have been the year we lived in Montreal.  She would have been five then.  Yes.  We didn't have much that year.  I'd been sick a lot, and Mr. Seeler had trouble finding work.  But we did our best for the kids.  And yes, a day or two before Easter I found a dye kit, probably on sale.  I boiled and dyed a dozen eggs - kept them in the fridge, except for that short time in the basket on the table for breakfast.

I remember a neighbour coming over a bit later in the day, and me offering him an egg.  And yes, the dye had leaked through and the egg white was tinted red, yellow, green or blue.

And 40 years later, Seelergirl remembers that very special occasion with joy, and wants to share it with her little boy.

We do all sorts of big things for our kids but it often is the little insignifiacnt ones that they remember.

This year my son sent me an email telling me that he had fallen off his bike, been checked out in hospital and was ok but banged up.....

i sent back advice for how to heal.....

then he sent me an April fools!  He reminded me of the year when I pretended i broke my arm .  i have no recollection of it but all these years later he pulled the same stunt on me.

I hope you grandkids enjoy colouring the eggs

It goes to remind us, it's who we are that counts, not who we try to be so much.

All those little things though, that go together to form a life. So many unexpected occurrances, chance meetings, happenstance things... What a vibrant and detailed tapestry are our lives.

This week must be 'show appreciation week'.   My granddaughter, now 14, just reminded me of a dress I made for her when she was about seven.  We were walking past the fabric section in a department store when she spotted some material that she just loved - cotton polyester, pastel colours with a silver sheen.  I wasn't thinking about making her anything, but she begged and I consented.  I made her a two piece outfit using the coloured material for a pinafor type that could be worn as a sundress or over the long sleeved mauve dress that I also made.

I thought that she would have long forgotten that dress - just taking it for granted that Grammies do things like that for kids, but now she remembers it as special.

I think it was the last thing I made for her, other than halloween costumes.  By the next year she was into jeans and knits and picking her own clothes.

Maybe it's a good time to help her pick out a cool pattern and teach her to sew and make her something else.

At the age my daughter really started into defining her own style.  Less "mall shopping" and more vintage stores, knitting, ....  Lots and lots of sundresses, some with big patterns so maybe she was hinting for another one
