Serena's Daycare Part III

So I have the five respite foster children again this weekend.

Again it is like living in a daycare.  I seem to spend all day cooking, cleaning, and washing.  Today is particularly hot and we were going to go to the pool but due to lack of lifeguards it is closed.

We did go to the playground this morning at 9:00 am and we came back at 10:30 and had snack and then it was too warm to go out anymore.  I don't think that it will cool down before bedtime.  Only 3 hours until bedtime.

I guess we will go to the playground again in the morning.  Earlier this time so they have more time to play before it gets hot.

There is no Sunday School so we are not going to Church in the morning.  Then hopefully at 1:00 PM the pool is open.  I may need to invest in a swimming pool and one of those sprinkler toys.

One of those sprinkler things sounds like a good idea.  Lots of fun for them and you can sit in your lawn chair and drink iced tea.

Very hot again. We were at the park at 8:30 am this morning until 10: 30 am.   I am debating whether it is worth putting four carseats in the van to go to McDonalds for lunch.   I do not feel like making anything to eat because I am too hot.

I will have to put them in the van anyway if the swimming pool is open and I won't know that until 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM.

Five foster kids and  a heat wave - Serena, you are a saint.  Just count down the hours now.  Do they go back this evening or do you have them until they leave for school tomorrow?

Yes, a sprinkler and a wading pool would be a good idea.  Or even just a garden hose with a spray.  If you have a sloped yard maybe you could spread out a large table cloth or old shower curtain, a spray of cheap shampoo, and a hose and it makes a great water slide.  (Too late for today, but maybe next time.)

Or head to the basement and play games - or flop down and read or tell stories.

And after they've been picked up - mix yourself a drink and join in some discussion on the cafe.

Seriously, I don't envy you.  A grandchild or two can sometimes drive me crazy - especially in the heat.

I think I would play in the sprinkler today it is so hot.  There is still yesterday's message on the pool phone.  So it is looking like the pool is not open.

A saint?  That is what my ex-boyfriend said.  He asked me if I was trying to be nominated for sainthood by keeping five foster kids.   He said there must be easier ways.

They go back at 7:00 PM tonight.  So it is six hours.  We just finished lunch.  We stayed in.  I decided that the expense of going out for lunch with five kids outweighed the benefits.  The heat has certainly not affected their appetites.    They are quieter though.

Do you have  basement?  When it's really hot out, I like to hide out there.  And if it's unfinished, sometimes that's even better.  Can have a good round of ballon soccer or sponge hockey without worrying about breaking anything.

The library is a good place to go, as well.

why didn't your church have sunday school?  though we don't have formal sunday school, we always have programming for kids...and they generally have a good time.

Could have done that yesterday.  The kids are 4 and 5 though so I don't think they would have gotten much out of the Library if I just go there and read them books.  The Library is closed on Sundays.

Yeah they could have watched Veggie Tales or something.  Sunday School is over for the summer.  The teachers are tired of teaching.  The last Sunday School was May long weekend.

We are in the basement.  The kids are just bugging me to go somewhere because they are bored not hot.  They want to go to the playground but it is too hot.

Snacktime is finished now.  I took the frozen pizza out of the freezer to unthaw for supper.  Now I am having coffee and motivating myself to go outside and put four carseats in my van.     The swimming pool is open and swimming starts at 4:00 PM.  I wonder if we will make it on time?     It depends if the car seats cooperate with Auntie Serena.  That is what I told the kids.

Serena? how hot is it there?

That sounds like 30-34 degree behaviour..rather than the kind of weather we are getting here.

So far this spring the weather has been delightful - only one day so far above 30.  Most days around 20 - 22 with a few hitting 25 in the afternoon.  Good shorts and T-shirt weather.  Great for being out in the garden.  I can't stand the heat when it's much more than that.

After a few weeks of sunny, moderate weather, we've had a bit of rain - but yesterday and today the sun was out again.  Just beautiful.  It's clouding over to rain again this evening.  The garden is delighted.

Seeler, we have had similair weather to what you report -- I think it was 27 one day.

Pinga The Internet weather says it is only plus 28.   I don't have a thermometer but my guess is that it is around plus 30.  I live in a small town so mytelus could be off by a few degrees.

Well the children were picked up at 7:15 PM.  I am tired.  The last load of dishes is done and needs to be put away.

The kids were good but five of them get on each other's nerves.  I am also not Serena homemaker where I like to cook and clean all day but when there are five extra people in the house that is what you do.  My full time foster kids were not so much work because there were only three and they were older.  They did not have to be supervised to wash their hands.  They could load the dishwasher and put dishes away.  They could put their own clothes away.   The oldest could vacuum.  The oldest two could even sweep the floor.  These guys are doing well to bring me their dishes after they eat.

I just got off the phone with my friend.  It was plus 36 here.  No wonder I am so tired.   It is raining now and I am going to bed.

After working so hard all weekend, is going back to work today a relief - or is it difficult to face a room full of children?

Wow Serena!

That IS a daycare. And just at the age where they have lots of energy but still have to be supervised doing almost everything. At least you didn't have to change diapers.

I would have just taken them to the back yard and hosed them down in the heat! There are spray pads in the playgrounds here and they are always full of kids: basically it's a big sprinkler system on concrete and the kids run through the spray jets shrieking at each other. I remember that I used to like to play in the sprinkler in the backyard as a little kid too.

It is June so I do not want to go to work anymore anyway.   I would rather stay home and sleep or do almost anything else.  Only eight more days of dragging myself out of bed.

Don't be too sure about that.   The children are developmentally delayed.  One is in diapars.

I was thinking about that but they probably would have cried.  They are real whiners.

Serena, sounds like an exhausting weekend.  I hope their full-time caregivers appreciated the break.

Personnally, Serena i think you are being taken advantage of

As I understand it you have 3 full time foster kids and then for the weekend you had 5 additional ones.

Or is it that you have 3 kids and took in an additional 2.  Either way, 5 kids is alot of kids.

And have you now bought a van or did you rent it for the weekend.  As I recall from your last post you talked about the car being too small for the 5 kids and seats.

Again I say, wow. FIVE kids AND some are developmentally delayed.

I think someone should call the Vatican and see if there is some sort of priority listing for potential sainthood.

Hi Lastpointe;

I sent the three foster kids back last June because I WAS being taken advantage of.   The bio family (about ten of them) started following me around so they could have 1/2 hour conversations with the children.  They were not allowed to see the children unless the mother passed a drug test.  The mother never showed up for the drug tests so they visits never happened.  So the mother and about 10 of her relatives decided to go around the system and just follow me around town.  These people were in and out of jail and certainly not the type of people I would be hanging around with.

I borrowed a van from a relative.

Actually, it is not much different than being in school except that I have 18 children there.  I found grade one a real adjustment after only teaching older children like grade 5 and 6.

I think I made it to sainthood last year when my life was threatened when the children's gangster biofamily was following me around.  The five are just extra halos.
