What I can do better than my kids

The twin thread about kids had me feeling useless until I thought about it.  Sure they are better than me at a heck of a lot of things, but I am old and full of wisdom, I've learned a lot in a lifetime, and I now have the leisure to devote to leisure.

How about you - what can you do better than your kids (and grandkids) who may be overtaking you in certain areas and who are competent in things that never even occured to you?

- I know about things from the olden days like how to prime a pump or cook a full meal on a wood stove - something that might come in handy if we loose our power for a few weeks or months.

- I still think I could find my way in the woods - at least a lot better than these city born and raised people could

- I know more about theology, and about the way my church works

- I am better at table games (though my son can run a close second and could probably equal me if he had more time)

- I have a different type of patience with my grandchildren, but I don't let them 'rule the roost'.

- I'm far better at geography (even local geography) than my daughter - but not my son

- I know more history (maybe because I've lived longer, but also because I enjoyed reading and studying history - particularly Canadian history).   I am a bit of an amature expert in the search for the northwest passage.    My daughter will still come to me after she's seen a movie about, say "the other Bolyn Girl' and ask me questions about the royal family.

My daughter is 4.  I hope to be better than her at most things for a few more years at least.

The one thing I like about getting older is the ability to put things in perspective and that I don't miss all the anxiety that comes with having to handle so many new situations- because there aren't as many situations new anymore...

The experience that I had with me over the years also let me to take myself and others a lot less serious.

I'm sure if I wanted to, I could throw a better tantrum that she can...but I choose not to.  ;)
