Building a House of Cards

So, I'm cleaning off the table of the multiple flyers that are inserted weekly in our local rag - you know the ones, they scream "death to trees, death to trees" but I digress - and what do my wondering eyes discover a flyer from my MP, the Honourable Tony Clement, extolling the virtues of the Home Renovation Tax Credit with great big bold blocks screaming, something like those trees but with more effect, IT'S WORKING, which may or may not be true but that is not what really triggers my old brain.

No, it is the little ballot like thing on the bottom that asks "Who is on the right track to help the economy?" and then the names of the party leaders - noticeably missing the Bloc leader but this is after all Muskoka - and an arrow strategically pointing right at Harper's name.  Also noticeably missing was None of the Above.

Now I know that I am politically paranoid, I accept that, it is my burden to bear but sometimes I happily embrace my Orwellian mindset because without it I would not notice such a beautiful example of party propaganda and I for one am happy to have my tax dollars - because yes, my fellow Canadians, this was paid for by you and me including the prepaid postage - go towards this flyer and the ACTIONPLAN, note capital letters, website.

Personally I can't wait for an election because if this is what our current government does while in power just imagine the creativity that will be produced with election induced hysteria.

I don't think you understand the difficulties under which Harper and his people labour. Just a few days ago, they were stunned to hear that the Afghanistan government is mistreating prisoners handed over by the Canadians, and was also torturing them.

Now, you can understand their problem. I mean, who would suspect the democratically elected government of Afghanistan of using torture? And, of course, you have American generals there who are always watching out for any such improper behaviour.

As well, though the Canadian representative in Afghanistan had sent back reports about the torture, who has time to read all that stuff when you have an important home renovation plan to set up?

Oh, I know, you're going to say they could spent fifteen minutes a day just scanning some of the foreign press on the web, and they would have known all about this a couple of years ago. But again, when you've got your hands full setting up brochures maintain the democratic process in Canada, you really don't have time to check the facts.

Besides, Peter Mackay has difficulty reading the foreign press. And he doesn't know the names of all those places they talk about.

LOL. Such cynicism! I love it.

LB, I have had much the same thoughts when ready the flyers from my lovely MP, Jay Hill. That reminds me, I was going to reply to the one about prison sentences......

And yes Graeme, Harper and his crowd have such a difficult job. Imagine how many door knobs there are too replace!  Shocking!

Smiles at Northwind.

And yes, it is my cynicism, heightened by two days in Toronto, that prevents me from being sympathetic to Mr. Harper's, and his honourable members', plight.

Graeme has, once again, properly chastised me and I shall try and repent from my wicked ways and embrace, with sycophantic joy, the ideology that the Home Renovation Tax Credit or <cue booming action hero voice over> ACTIONPLAN!!!! will allow me to ride into the sunset of my dotage on an energy efficient toilet or, at the very least, be content with winding up in the toilet when this pipe dream bursts.

Father forgive me for I have committed yet another sin:  the run on sentence....

I heard the other day about the plan to lock up white collar criminals for at least 2 years.  All I could think was "Lock Harper up for fraud."

Tories under fire for web link to Harper piano debut

The action plan website has been the subject of considerable controversy over the last few weeks.

Critics have slammed it for appearing to be a Conservative propaganda tool rather than a non-partisan information source. The blue motif is similar to that on Conservative party websites and is plastered with photos of Harper, although many of the pictures were removed after The Canadian Press drew attention to the issue.

The website is administered by the Privy Council Office, the bureaucratic arm of Harper’s office. Sources have told The Canadian Press that PCO bureaucrats were reluctant to take charge of the site and have raised concerns about its partisan nature

These flyers are being sent out to most constituencies that aren't Conservatives and they are for what's known as "push-polling" -- the Cons are hoping to get answers about you specifically and more generally, about how they can package their message during the election to appeal to voters and get their much-desired majority. If you are not fond of the Conservatives, and don't wish to provide them with such information (even if negative), RESIST THE URGE TO REPLY, no matter how tempting.

This is a misuse of tax money -- using our hard-earned dollars to pay for their propaganda and it's hard for many people not to tell them that. However, I highly recommend recycling their material or, if must, gather them together as they come in and send them to your own (not Conservative) MP or a party leader of another party, if you're in a Conservative riding. That way, the Cons don't have the information they're looking for to shape their election platform/message.

Just my humble opinion, of course.

Nicely said, MotherofFive.

Personally, I use the material for fire starter and, like the ACTIONPLAN!, it ignites quickly but does not provide lasting warmth.
