Doug Cuthan is a write for the two largest newspapers in saskatchewn. He is an advocate for First Nations People. This was in the paper this morning and something about it irks me - maybe it is written tongue in cheek but I find the casino and gun references disrespectful of First Nation's people. Here it is and what do you think?I know there are political references but something feels off to me.
Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the tipi
Not a creature was stirring,
It was downright creepy.
The children were lined up
Asleep on their mats
Rolled up in their blanket
And wearing their hats.
With ma home from the band office
And me from the casino
We counted my winnings
From an evening of keno.
When up on the top
There was such a commotion
That ma jumped out of bed
With enormous emotion
Whoa Donner and Blitzen
And Stephen and Brad
Who pulled to the right
Which was clumsy and bad.
On Lawrence and Chuck
To the top of the hill
Don't stop and debate
Leave that up to Phil
The tipi was shaking
It rattled and rolled
And down the smoke hole
A fat man dropped out of the cold.
He jumped to his feet
With his pants red with fire
He ran in small circles
Losing his winter attire.
Next came the raindeer
They plunged one by one
Into the Tipi
Not looking like fun.
The children awoke
My wife was in shock
To see all the mayhem
Before 10 o clock.
The dogs were awake
They quickly gave chase
The fat man got up
And he quickened his pace
The reindeer joined in
And followed his lead
Racing to safety
With both fear and speed
The dogs loudly barked
I looked for my gun
The fat man departed
On a dead run.
I carefully aimed
The reindeer ran fast
The sleigh dragging behind
Leaving the fat man at last.
"Don't shoot me", he yelled
And I put down my rifle
And let him escape
Without so much as a trifle.
Things went back to normal
Over the course of a week
So we took our winnings from Keno
Down to Martinique.

The casino reference is in very poor taste IMHO.
However, the Stephen and Brad comment is funny.

Don't like it. Tipi's ?? what aboriginal person lives in a tipi? And isn't it spelled Teepee?
poor taste

Lastpoint - Teepee or tipi. Both are equal. They are translations into a foreign alphabet.

Perhaps it's in somewhat bad taste, but the first question that comes to mind is...so what?
There is a lot of humor which crosses the boundaries of taste and continues to do so. I'm glad that it does. At least then we know the boundaries of taste. And besides, in humor, I tend to think that the content need not be encumbered by such things as taste - is humor supposed to be a civilized thing at all times?

If he is an advocate for First Nations People, perhaps he is merely pointing out stereotypes. Setting it in the form of satire can sometimes make the stereotype seem silly, which in most cases they are.

Good point, cf. It would depend on the context that this was being presented in.

Hehe I love ironic, or satirical debunking of things (within reason), does anyone listen to a band called "Hadouken!"? Case in point.
Good british band, I recomend everyone here look up their song "Liquid Lives" or at least the lyrics (the song makes it so much better though...).
Very awesome song, one of my favorites.

I've flagged Raiseed's post as offensive.
