The shift in the U.S. - is it a foreshadowing of what's to come up here? Should Harper be worrried?
I'm not sure, since the U.S. election was more about Iraq than any particular Demcratic policies being embraced. (You have to actually have a few of them in order for someone to embrace them. The Dems just kept saying 'change, change, change', without bothering to elaborate. Brilliant strategy, as it turned out.)
But back to my main topic: Should Harper be worried? I think he should be, but that it doesn't spell certain doom. If he's as stubborn on Afghanistan as Bush was on Iraq, he's in big trouble. If he hears the groundswell, however, and does something - he might survive. After all, look at his likely competition.

No, I believe Canadians are interested in American politics, but don't base their votes on what's happening south of the border.

No doubt about it Harper - should be worried.
Poor guy hitched his star to a neo-com ideology that Bush put forward , was rejected by the American pople and will go the way of the dinosaurs.
Poor Steve, nobody told him that we only wanted him on as temp, while the liberals got their act tgether.

I suspect Harper - flaws and all - will be with us for a while. Why? The Liberals seem to be bound and determined to wander in the wilderness for a little while longer. Iggy's too gaff-prone, and his ideas regarding Quebec are absolute show-stoppers for the vast majority of Canadians. Rae's another likely leader, and Ontario hasn't forgotten his short but troubled time at the helm as NDP Premier.
Unless a third leadership candidate can somehow do a last-minute rise to the top, the Liberals will be lead by someone with significant baggage, and the Conservatives will get another shot at strengthening their hold on power.

Ottercreek The liberals will never get their act together, they have misled the public in so many ways. We still wondering where the rest of the money went that is still unaccountable. I say wtg to Stephen Harper for standing up to China, where the Liberals didnt give a hoot about how people are treated. Look at Mr. Graham He knew Mr. Thompson a canadian citizen was being tortured in Iracque. Did he offer to take his place. No he decided to keep quiet about it and not rock the boat.

Gee Sylviac, Harper would never let another country torture a Canadian. Well, not unless he was underage and had a foreign name and the Americans really wanted to torture him. And the way he stood up to China - well, that took real guts--I mean, when he told them....exactly what the hell did he tell them?
I think we're heading into some really ugly politics. Harper has nothing but ugly to run on. And the liberals are lost at sea.
