First Nations & Fiscal Responsibility

Just thought I'd share this 'Occupy' piece:

Check out the links…

----------

Annoyed that the First Nations don't pay tax and so must be taking your tax dollars? You've been MIS-INFORMED.

Furthermore, the money is now being held hostage by the Harper government, who is refusing to allow the trust funds to pay out if the Band Chiefs don't effectively sign away their treaties. It's all about the removal of "non-derogation clauses". Read more:http://apihtawikosisan.com/2013/03/19/are-you-alarmed-you-should-be/

This is financial blackmail. Some would say financial warfare. If the chiefs don't sign, basic infrastructure like water could stop working, causing crises. If they do sign, they make their treaties ignorable for the year, allowing the resource-extraction industry to take their land. It's all about stealing the land, for the benefit of the resource extraction industry. -ß

Feds ‘blackmailing’ First Nations into signing away their power over water, resource development for continued funding, say some First Nations chiefs

The Onion Lake Cree Nation will defy the harper government’s new law ordering First Nations bands to publicly disclose financial information, Chief Wallace Fox says.

“It is state-sanctioned blackmail, pure and simple,” Fox said. “It’s legalized extortion.”

“Many of the chiefs have the same opinion on Bill C27,” he said. “We have not been consulted on anything.”

Bill C-27: First Nations Financial Transparency Act

• This bill will force First Nations to open up all the books, source revenue, and business revenue (for the public)

• Failure to make business information public can result in being taken to court and having funds to the community cut off

• Currently, if leaders speak up, they risk having budgets slashed

• The average salary for a First Nation leader is $36,845, while the salary of the average Canadian is $46,345

Here's a responsible, level-headed link about chiefs' and officials' incomes that's worth reading:

I agree - let's open up those books! Start with the PBO's requests for information about cost overruns for the F35's, among other Fed's secret books.

And then some transparency about commissions created by the Harper Government that either ended up with no work to do, or had appointees who failed to do their work.

obviously Canada is now a rogue nation, flaunting the rule of law like that...

Canada has been a rogue nation for a while.

Here's a Maclean's take on fiscal responsibility:

It's worth a read.

I expect an open campaign of hatred and racism directed at native peoples. Indeed, I have already come across a conservative flyer (circulated by John Williamson, MP for St. John, NB. and a certified lout. If he had written that flyer about Jews, he would nowo be facing charges under our hate laws.

Like most of our prime ministers (in fact, almost all of them), Harper would like the get rid of the whole idea of native peoples and treaty obligations. The issue is also useful to him in political terms. As a voting bloc, native peoples are insignificant. Nor is a defence of their rights likely to attract the non-native vote. It will, however, attract the not insignificant number of bigots in the this county.

I should add the URL for this flyer is posted on my blog for Sunday, April 7.

sorry. I posted the wrong URL for the Conservative attack on First Nations. The one I posted is on how Harper just gave six million dollars of our tax money to a private, Baptists university which has a formal policy discriminating against gays. I suspect that's illegal.

For some reason, I cannot get the flyer ( which is in an e mail) to copy onto anything. I could perhaps e mail it if I had an e mail address to send it to.

Ah, I just got a copy of the flyer onto my blog for tomorrow. Still can't get it here.

I find it outrageous that the First Nations are being hammered about being honest in their financial dealings and yet are still being treated this badly by Harper and his followers.

I'm glad that someone read it and found it useful.

I didn't hear anything about this on radio news.  It really is too bad that politicians choose to waste money on court cases instead of putting money into housing on, and off, reserves.
