The 21-year-old double-lung transplant recipient will appear as a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show next Tuesday, fulfilling a wish she’s had since she was 14 to meet the daytime talk-show host.

Campbell’s health has improved following a number of setbacks last fall.

She returned to Toronto General Hospital, where her transplant was performed last April, at the beginning of January for a weeklong checkup.

“Everything was good,” she says. “No infection, no rejection. The blowers are great.”

And with her spot on DeGeneres’s show arranged and an earlier appearance in Maclean’s magazine behind her, Campbell says that the big things remaining on her to-do list are meeting the Queen, returning to Spain, and taking a train across Canada.

But Campbell looked completely at ease, discussing her lung function — now at 73 per cent and still improving — along with her gratitude to her donor family and to DeGeneres, whose team has kept in close contact with the Campbell family since connecting a year ago with the talk show host. “I’m able to dance with Ellen DeGeneres,” she said.

The appearance prompted virtual recognition from Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who tweeted “Great to see @alungstory recovering and enjoying her time on @TheEllenShow. She is an inspiration.” shortly after the show.

Campbell was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in October 2011 and added to the wait list for double lungs in January 2012. That’s when she started her social media campaign, which attracted Bieber and Ellen. She received a double lung transplant April 6, 2012 and has been recuperating since.

She told DeGeneres that transplant is a treatment, not a cure, and she has had some setbacks in the ensuing months. Campbell talked about the Give 2 Live Campaign her family has begun with the Toronto General Hospital to support lung research and adults who need organ transplants and must wait in Toronto to be near the transplant site.
