Several Members of Parliament said they were caught off guard by the news.
"It's shocking for somebody to do that," said Labour Minister Lisa Raitt. "I'd hate to be the one opening that."

Hi Alex,
Why send a foot, when they needed brains, or a heart or a conscience.
That can be illustrated by Minister Lisa Raitt, who expressed sympathy for the person who open the parcel, and not the person who lost there foot and life.
Just because they are minus a foot it doesn't follow that they are dead?
Perhaps it is actually an application for a future Conservative Candidate who is exceptionally good at stumping?
Grace and peace to you.

The local reporter for the CBC first question, "Was Is it clearly a foot?" Hew next question was "Was it a left foot or a right foot" I guess she is hoping to moveup to covering Parliment. or she was thinking by narrowing it down those who are missing a foot would know it by chance it could be theres.
Later she asked . Why is this being investiagted by the majot crime unit. Is it not just a prank?
Whats with the CBC?

I am not sure I see the humour here.
a person or persons has been murdered and dismembered.
tell me again why that is funny?

As someone who has lived through a lot of death, seeing many of my friends die before they reached 30, and than continued to see so many more die, I try to find humour even in death, otherwise death wins.
Black humour has a tradition going back to ancient times.

Alex, I have no issues with poking a bit of fun at an absurd, unusual story and funny headlines. I do find the lack of sympathy being expressed to the person who opened the parcel appalling. I think finding such a thing in the mail would be shocking, horrifying, and I think it would be natural to feel victimized and violated.
I haven't seen any information about who the body parts came from. It's more difficult to be sympathetic towards someone unknown and circumstances unknown than someone when you have some details as to what happened.

I will not post the link to the video, but here is a link to an Xtra News article that talks about it and provides a link.

"a person or persons has been murdered and dismembered."
Not quite sure how one jumps automatically to that conclusion. I haven't looked at all the most recent headlines relating to these rather creepy events of course but has anyone considered that the body parts could come from a cadaver? or be medical waste?
Alex

Now the National Post has provided a full description of the alledge video that shows the murder. Unlike the Xtra News article which decided after a few hours (and many furious comments) it no longer name the web site when you can watch it and provide a link. The National Post article provodes the name of the web site, but no link.

My reasoning for assuming murder, which appears to be the ce, is that the package seeped blood.
A cadaver does not seep blood.
And even if it was a cadaver, stolen from a morgue or lab, it is still a crime to dismember and desecrate a body.
I get black humor Alex, but I thought this was something out of line for this forum.

I'm actually fairly familair with the world of real crime.. give John Douglas' books (Mind Hunter, Journey Into Darkness, Obsession) a go sometime if you have the stomach for it. He was one of the FBI agents who essentially invented behavioral profiling and his books on serial killers get pretty graphic.

I had not clicked on this thread until now. Why? I know that if a hand went to Romney's or Obama's campaign headquarters it would be comedy fodder for Letterman, Leno, Behar, et al. The comic may or may not be representing their genuine political views. Most comics go for the joke and it does not matter who....You may just see their comedy view on what is and is not funny. I can see a political party I adore roasted and laugh. I have laughed at jokes about gays.
Watching them have their go at it, I would or would not find it funny. Part is delivery, part is how much I like the style... there are variables.
I am part of those variables. Am I in a giggly mood? Am I not? I also know I arrive at any black comedy as the child of someone murdered. Does that mean I cannot laugh? No. There are times I have.
Likely, if it is funny, I would laugh and then at some point say to myself, "this is not funny", perhaps while still laughing my fool head off.
If I knew going in there would be dismembered body jokes, I likely would not tune in (whether or not I like the comics or not) So, I didn't. I knew it would get there, even it it did not start there. This could have started as a news post. I did not know, because I had not read. I simply expected, at some point, there to be jokes made. So, I did not tune in.
I guess if you expected this to be a CNN type thread and get ComedyCentral, you might get your knickers in a knot. It might even offend you.
I am not sure about those who keep tuning back in to be re-offended...
For me, it is humour and it is either funny or not.
Is it funny? Not really, but that said, it can be.
This morning a news report said, "police got a hand from the folks at gore.com." The reporter then added very seriously and nervously, "not a real hand, they got tips, tips from people at gore.com" I laughed. It was funny. Then I said, "this is not funny".

I agree.
Sometimes we human beings react (inappropriately?) to appalling situations for reasons that even we have difficulty explaining. Sometimes the things we see or hear about are so far out of the realm of what we have experienced that we have trouble deciding what to make of the information.
Opening a box at work to find a foot in it would be a shock to be sure. I think I would find it surreal. Upon hearing that it happened to someone else, if I knew that individual, I would at first think they were yanking my chain.
I recall, years ago, sitting in medical lecture at UofT. On the screen was presented a man whose face had been centrally eaten away, by what, I cannot exactly recall. Likely and agressive cancer. You could see right into his sinuses. It was a horrific image. The audience was laughing an uncomfortable, nervous laugh. Many in the crowd were physicians and surgeons. It was very strange. I also recall watching a video years ago about skin grafts. There was a mixed response in class........from nervous laughter, to hands over the eyes (me) to leaving the room to throw up.
The subject of the murder of this man is a tragedy and a crime. The comments made still make me laugh, and I feel sort of guilty about that, much like when I laughed at the photo of the man with half a face. OMG! surely that can't be real? Sadly, it is.

We humans are complex creatures........
We are perfectly capable of empathising with the shock and horror faced by the person opening the package -and yet at the same time laugh with comedians when they send up the whole sorry saga.
As with a lot of humour there is also the element of,"I'm relieved that didn't happen to me"!
Humour can give us the distance we need to cope with suffering.
A lot of comedians suffer from depression.
Their humour can be a defence against their illness - and sometimes, as with the suicide of Tony Hancock, it's not enough.............
(I have my own theory that those who can't enjoy dark comedy are restrained in other ways -and can't enjoy their full humanity. Being "righteous" outweighs being fully human)........
My brother and I have enjoyed dark humour since we were kids and came across a book of jokes in our parent's bookcase.
Here's a joke that, many, many, years later I still remember.
"Why did you put barbed wire on your banisters?"
"To stop Grandma from sliding down them."
"Did it stop her?"
"No. But it sure slows her down."

These things are also unbeleievable that our brains see them as fiction. Much like those who watched the trade towers collapse, there brains interperted it as something out of a movie.
This is so unbelievable that a lawyer in the US who was alerted to the online video, and was convinced that it was real, spent the day phoning police agencies in Canada to report it. . Except for the RCMP none believed him, and even refuse to give out their email to him so that he could send them a copy of the link to the video.
Toronto police accused of ignoring body parts case tip
Roger Renville, a U.S. civil litigation lawyer, told CBC News Thursday that he had come across the 10½-minute video Saturday morning on a website that showcases gory videos. Renville said he believes the video documents the killing and dismemberment of a man.
.......................
"What I saw in that video exceeds your worst nightmare. It's Jeffrey Dahmer-esque."
Renville then began a series of calls to a number of law enforcement agencies in Canada and the United States over the next three days, starting with his local sheriff's office. Most agencies — with the exception of the RCMP in Ottawa — were not especially keen on finding out more about the video, said Renville.
By Sunday at around noon mountain time, he called Toronto police and told them he had seen a video that he believed depicted the killing of a man and that he believed that the apparent killer was from Toronto.
"The officer was very skeptical. He seemed like he didn't even want to talk at first, but we got to talking a little bit and he suggested that whatever I was seeing must be fake. And he suggested that special effects are pretty good these days and it'd be hard to tell if it was real or not," said Renville.
"He told me that my story didn't even make sense. Why would a killer film himself and then put it on the internet? He said, 'That doesn't make sense, that's illogical.'"
Renville persisted, and asked the officer to provide him an email address so that police could view the video themselves.
"He said no, they wouldn't be needing a link and he declined to give me an email address."

Finding something to be funny does not take away from something's seriousness -- they are NOT OPPOSITES
The opposite of funny is not funny and, as we all know, not everyone shares the same humour
My uncle found Codco funny -- I never undertstood it
I used to find Jerry Lewis hilarious, now I don't
Forgive me now trying to explain humour (*gack* *wheeze* gotta up my Puritan innoculations...) perhaps what we find to be sacred & blasphemous we tend not to find humour in -- a human body can be seen as sacred and laughing at death can be seen as blasphemous. The Conservative party are seen by some as sacred and making fun of them can be seen as blasphemous. Etc etc etc
*gack* I feel ill...*injects self with Puritan booster shot*

It is interesting that the family is refusing to talk, although it may only be that they refuse to talk to the press. I hope that they are at least talking to police and are able to offer some insight into what makes this man tick. He is one sick individual.
