This was a wonderful point, beautifully made.

You don't need a lot of words to shatter bible-based bigotry. All you have to do is shine a light on it, and watch the cockroaches scatter.

I saw this article as well chansen .....
Thank you for your post.....
There is only one minor issue I have with this....
Stoning was for something that was "wrong" .... "sin".......
What I am is not wrong nor is it sin ...
However scripture says a lot about using unjust weights and measures.....
I feel that those that refuse to actually look into this are guilty of willful ignorance and are responsible for using unjust weights and measures....
It is I that actually holds the stone......
What to do......
Regards
Rita

It doesn't matter if something is a sin or not. "Sin" is a religious invention, and it has nothing to do with secular law. Those who do care what the bible says, would often disagree with you about which person is being sinful in this situation. I couldn't care less.
But again, the bible is useless as a defense for bigotry in this case, even in bible belt states. People just pretend they get their morals from the bible, but we've evolved past it, and moments like this serve as shining reminders of how far we've come since it was written.

gays are a minor issue. First, we have to get tough on people who don't publicly stone their children for being disobedient.
And I have h ad it up to here with those false Christians who won't let me sacrifice an ox in my own back yard.

To say nothing of those who wear clothing of mixed fibres!

Maybe the concern is more about how you always overcook bar-b-que?
Grace and peace to you.

I've never had an argument with a neighbour about his ox falling into a hole I've dug and breaking its neck, yet the Bible gives instructions about how this should be settled. And not a word about a neighbour who cleans his side of a shared driveway and throws snow over onto my side.

I think we can extrapolate the biblical example to say that when a neighbour throws his snow on your driveway, you throw a dead ox on his.

Dead ox in the drive LMAO
Ripped clothes = death. Sorry, those who made it out of elementary school would have never made it out of the 80's.

Hi GeoFee,
Anyone up for the forgiving of debt and the redistribution of wealth every seventh year?
Sabbath years was primarily an agricultural event. No planting fields were to lie fallow.
Jubilee (the seventh Sabbath year or 50th year) was the forgiveness of debt and the restoration of individuals to their land allotments. Wealth was not redistributed. Individuals/familes were entitled to keep all that they had worked to earn. Land was never sold, it could only be leased and the lease could never last past a jubilee.
Grace and peace to you.
John

Thanks, John, for clarifying.
.
In Steinbach MB, then known as the buckle on the Prarie bible belt, I was, as UCC clergy, fair game in the local coffee shops, where I liked to hang out to keep in touch.
.
Some old farmer would lean into my space. "What do you have to say about all that 'gay' stuff?"
.
"Are you gay Joe?", I'd ask.
.
"No!", he would bluster.
.
To which I would respond, "Niether am I. Why don't we talk about something we both know about. What does the Bible say about land use?"
.
You can imagine that I earned a reputation in the neighborhood.

maybe if a few more of the world's fun virgins (cf. religious fanatics) got stoned, the world would be (and history would've been) a more groovy place...

The Liberal side sometimes backs away from scripture in conversation with the Conservative side. I had the good fortune of being raised Dutch Calvinist and being well equipped for the engagement of the Biblical text.
.
I am now thinking of the story which presents Jesus in the presence of the Devil. Three texts are cited by the Devil. Jesus responds with three texts.
.
Scripture is best considered a dialogue. It is much misused and abused when considered a monologue.
.
Your presence and manner here are appreciated.
