I found this rather humbling.
I knew that I was bad at geography, but dang...not this bad!

I got a bunch, but I was lousy at the Saharan countries.

so many -stans. And some I have never heard of.

I probably got about 15 on the first try - the ones that have been around since I was in school: Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, etc. Then I began educated guess: all those stans have to go north of Afghanstan, right? Those Sahara countries were hard. Finally I was filling in the last four or five by the process of illimination: four blank spots, five names - try them in each spot.
How come I have a name left over? Does anyone know where Bahrain is?

It is that little dot just north of Quatar - I had problem with that one because I knew it was in that area, very small and had a coastline, but it looked like it was already covered by Quatar.
My problem was thinking some countries had smaller land masses than others. Perception is always illusionary....

To me, it seems a dreadful indignity to have a soul controlled by geography. George Santayana

High school was a long time ago and the map has changed considerably since then. I kept looking for Yemen. For some reason I thought it was smaller.

The -stans are the most confusing for me. I got the majority of the other ones first try. But then I am a geek who likes to look at maps on the internet just for the heck of it ...
BTW, for anyone who is on facebook and wants to improve geography, get the Traveler IQ Challenge application. It covers all areas of the world, and some of them are freakingly hard. But very addicting ... LOL

I got about half of them on my first try. I've now done it a few times and have them all memorized. (I tested myself by going through the list alphabetically and placing them, then by going through the list backwards, and then by going across the map west to east placing the names as I progress.)

So much of the whole area is populated by peoples with their own bagpipe traditions. A keen interest in bagpipes can teach you a lot of geography.

Maybe. But then you have to actually listen to the things.

After a few tries, and helping my husband and granddaughter through - today I tried again and got the whole map with no mistakes (hear that - no mistakes). I'm feeling pretty good. You can teach an old dog like me.

When we realize that the universe is build on the musical vibrations of little tiny strings...the voice of God...and when we can stop our human hustle-bustle and listen to God speak...we will realize the truth...
It sounds like bagpipes ^^
