For those who didn't see the documentary last night " Shake Hands with the Devil" I believe its well worth watching. Its an old story about Romeo Dallaire's journey as a peace keeper in Rwanda in the 90's. Its a very gruesome experience to watch . I would call it a holocaust and its very possible that something like this can happen again.
I can readily understand and agree with Dallaire's assessment of the U.N. I love Dallaire for having the courage to come forward and speak up. Now involved in putting a stop to the use of child soldiers world wide he's a wonderful humanitarian. We should be honoured and grateful in Canada to claim him as one of our own.
Aside: Its possible that Sudan may face serious starvation this year. Due to the world turmoil, Syran refugees etc. the UN says there may not be enough incoming revenue to rescue Sudan. It could be as bad as the 80's they say.....remember Ethopia?
I believe the UN needs to be replaced with a new and better type of agency. What do you think?
Its much talked about but I believe there is little chance of it happening. Its too powerful an organization. It was originally mandated to bring peace to the world in 1948..?. There hasn't been any peace.
The UN is notoriously slow and inept at delivering programs and aid or various help where it is much needed. There is so much red tape before help is implemented that its almost too late. As a Unicef volunteer in the 80's I used to phone the schools inquiring if they were participating in the orange box distribution Halloween program. One year I phoned 1500 schools in October. I was a busy beaver. It was very difficult to get a reponse. Sometimes it took 2-3 call backs, very time consuming. Results were needed re the number of orange boxes required prior to Oct. 31 at Halloween re shipping and distribution.
In general I felt there was often very little enthusiasm from the schools. "Ho..hum..here we go again. Are people starving? Is it the black Africans as usual".....pun intended.
One year the Catholic schools almost dropped out of supporting Unicef because they said the World Heath Org. was supporting abortion via Unicef. I had to give rants over the phone .I used Mother Theresa's philosophy as a hope and a reason for them to stay with Unicef.

i'm amazed that Canadians didn't collectively commit suicide during that time...perhaps it is time for Canada to be replaced by a new and better type of agency?
maybe when AI becomes mainstream, there can be a kind of global justice with AI 'archons/angels' who don't have tribalism built-in to their programming but, rather, are beholden to ALL of humanity...
now that can't ever go wrong, can it? ;3

Although global justice would be ideal, we still are a long ways away from a system of global justice. It would entail a global parliament, global law, a global judiciary, and a global police force.
The UN and the EU are good first steps in that direction.
