Social Democracy

In this thread I am attemplting to gain some insight into what I have made of myself.

In my lifetime I have often heard the sayings-

A fool and his money are soon partred.

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

I was born in 1941 which means that I grew up in the company of men who had come back from Europe where they had been struggling with Hitler.  Social Democracy seems to have been very important to them.

Now it seems to me that we have reverted and the above sayings pretty much represent our political idiology again.

Sweden seems to be having a problem with maintaining a social democracy. They have invited many, but keep them in their place:

I used to hear "Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves".  It has been my motto throughout life - because it makes sense to me.  I am always taken aback when retired friends share that they are having difficulty handling their debt - one couple said they are paying a mortgage and loans for a car, a big camping trailer and last year's holiday to Europe.  They were just as taken aback when we shared that we have been debt free since our kids finished High School.  My partner said "We might not look rich but what we have is truly ours".
