What type of political leader do you want?

Beside their political platform, what is it that you want in a leader?

It comes out often that people want someone they could sit and drink a beer with, someone who is relatable, etc.

I don't think those things are bad, but they are usually used to describe someone who I don't want as a leader.

I want someone who is able to act professionally, I think that's important when working with other forms of government.  I want someone who is intelligent.  Hopefully that would help them know where to look when they don't know enough about an issue on their own.  I want someone who is approachable, they might be intimidating just because of their position, but I want them to be open to listening, sometimes their are issues you aren't aware of if you're not living it.

I like a few of yours and will add:

Someone who has clear ideas and is prepared to defend them rather than blowing with the fickle winds of the polls. If they change a position, they have a sound reason beyond "the latest polls says I should". You don't necessarily vote for them because you agree with everything they say, but because they say it with integrity and you'll know what you'll get.

Someone who knows what hypocrisy is and goes out of their way not to be guilty of it. I'm sick of politicians who tell us what's best for us but don't practice what they preach (e.g. saying "we must all tighten our belts" while awarding massive untendered contracts for military hardware).

Someone who can speak persuasively and strongly for a position, but is also prepared to listen and learn.

Someone who can own up to their mistakes and deal with them rather than lying, vacillating, or trying to change the subject.

All the above and well-educated --a great role model. Good resume. Someone to aspire to.

I want someone HONEST with a VISION (not an ideology)…

I want a leader who is COMPASSIONATE, SENSITIVE and RESPECTFUL towards all people regardless of culture, race, origins, sex and sexual orientation, religious beliefs, job or career… one who places JUSTICE ahead of 'The Economy' and ENVIRONMENTAL and SOCIAL health ahead of immediate financial returns.

I want a leader who genuinly respects and fosters DEMOCRACY, and sees the importance of raising up the poor, protecting the vulnerable (including prison inmates) and disarming prejudice as necessry components of democratic due process.

I certainly don't want an addictions-riddled foul-mouthed crook or bigot, or an opportunistic, media-savvy thug is a suit. I don't want a conniving, self-interested power player.

I can't really add to much more - would be nice to get these qualities in a young person under 50 to run for office.

I would say it with a quote from Albus Dumbledore: "Only the one who wanted to find the stone, but not use it('s power), could find it."

I like to see leaders of any kind who are on the job for reasons other than power.

Yeah, I got partway through Mendalla's post and I was thinking a good negotiator, and a good communicator, but he covered that too.

All of the above, and I want them to be honourable.

To err is human. Making a mistake is not dishonourable, but to deny or downplay it, or to lie about it or obfuscate it is. A political leader who has made a mistake can remain honourable by admitting it, apologising for it, and, if necessary, resigning voluntarily and immediately—before being pushed into resigning.
