Just as bush did in Afghanistan, Obama has stirred up a war in Syria that cannot be ended in any way satisfactory to the west.
The attempt was to do what began way back in Afghanistan when the CIA successfully stirred up a rising by the Taliban against the USSR. It worked, at first, as the USSR was beaten. They did the same thing in Libya, adding the No Fly Zone as a device to bomb to do huge damage to that country, reducing the ability of Libya to be a nuisance in any way.
Then, with the Arab league and turkey, it tried the same game in Syria. You train and arm a "rebel" army (many of them mercenaries). they start killing. And when the government shoots back, it's "slaughtering its own people." And you strike a righteous pose to demand international intervention against this cruel government.
It was months ago, back in January, that the NYTimes admitted most of the news reports from Syria were false. In fact, much of the slaughter in Syria has been rebels - killing Christians. And the rebels are nowhere close to forming a government. Indeed, the most united group among the rebels is made up of Islamic Jihadists. And we've been supplying them. And our news reports have mostly been lies.
But Obama needs Syria out of the way to attack Iran. And, as in AFghanistan, there is no way to end this war in a manner suiting US interests. So what does he do? He can't just shrug his shoulders and walk away. That would be humiliating - which is why he's been slow in walking away from Afghanistan.
What he might do is to retry the Libya gambit. Declare a no fly zone, then use it to bomb the life out of Syria - and then set up his own puppet rulers. But that runs the risk of sending the whole region into chaos and war.
My guess is he goes for the intervention with NATO again being invited to join. Harper will say yes.
The next two months will be the most dangerous we've seen since the low years of World War Two.

in response to the demand, I should add that the general purpose of these middle east wars is to reduce the arab states to fractured tribal states that will have no power to resist western exploitation. This is, notably, what is happening to Libya, and what will happen to Syria and Lebanon.
Israelis are strongly opposed to these wars, especially the prospect of one in Iran.
But Netanyahu is quite crazy - and the politically correct in Canada (and in Wondercafe) rush to kiss his feet because they assume he represents Israeli thinking. There is no telling what he might do, and what disasters he might set in motion. His own generals think he's crazy.

I think one of the factors that has made direct intervention by the west/US corporation world in Syria is the presence of many Christians who support the existing governement.
It is my belief that one of the ways that they get US citizens to support wars is that they have kept the ideals of the Christian Empire. That is we must kill people to save, them, and that is what God wants us to do. Just as they believe God sent his son to be killed, so that we could be "saved" We must send our sons, daughters to be killed, or just our money.
This works well when fighting people who are atheists (Communists), and Muslims. Howevr it is problematic when there is a large indiginous population of Christans. SInce they are already "saved" the US must either declare them to be heretics, which is difficult to do, or they have to come up with other reasons to convince people to support killing. In Israel and Palestine, they have done so by saying the CHristan God gave the Jews Israel.
So what is the US military and Wall St going to do?

Wall St. is safe. north American news has scarcely mentioned that issue.
Their really are few nationalities in that area. I went to school with Syrian kids. They are now called Lebanese becuuse their home villages are now a part of Lebanon.
You can't eat the entrails of children any more. You can still kill them - and we still do that. But modern weaponry can leave the dead radioactive. So dentists caution against eating them.

The latest news is that there are now at least 30 groups on the rebel side, and they have been fighting with each other. And very few have any interest in democracy.
