OS: Windows 2000 sp 4
Using IE and Mozilla Firefox and both crash
Done spyware sweep and checked for viruses
requires reboot to restore browser functionality
Wasn't sure if this would be considered popular culture or social - my apologies if this isn't in the appropriate thread.

What are you using for spyware sweep?

Are you using IE7? My computer automatically upgraded to it and all hell broke loose. everything crashed all the time. The new Firefox 2 is quite stable. If you have IE7, remove it. get Firefox 2, avoid the evil empire of Gatesglobaldomination and be happy. :-)

Are anti-virus definition files up to date?
Strange that it's both browsers, but I'd still try reinstalling IE.
And make sure all Windows updates are done.

Have you tried clearing your /temp directories and cookies and then rebooting?

Could you give us an idea of what was going on just before the crash? Knowing what the browsers were up to before the crash helps the diagnosis, especially if both browsers are crashing.

I have IE 6.0 and Firefox 2.0. At first I thought it was IE but downloaded Firefox and it crashes too - both go down at the same time. I'm using Adaware for spysweep and AVG for anti-virus. Anti-virus updates daily. I have the pc set to capture latest updates too.
I power my pc off when not using it and the crash seems to happen after it's been on for a while. Sometimes it happens while browsing and sometimes I'll leave it on come back on they're both down. It won't connect and I'll get the lovely "this program is not responding" msg in task manager.

Meredith,
I had the same problem. My sytem is windows XP so not sure if you can do this with your system, but what I did was go to start-programs-assesories-system tools-system restore. This lets you restore your computer to an earlier date (say last week or two weeks back before the browers started crashing.). The only problem with this is you will need to back up any files you did between today and the restore point you choose. It worked for me and I have had no browser problems since doing this.

What I would do is try a disk cleanup or otherwise get rid of all temporary files and temporary internet files and cookies. If that doesn't work, then system restore to a date before the crashes started.

Gee MadMonk,
Jesus is mad at me.
that would explain everything that's wrong in my life.
But I don't really care what's causing the crash unless causation will point to solution.....
So while I get busy making things right with the Lord...
CAN YOU OFFER ME ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS????!!!!!!
(vein on forhead bulges even more)

I use Firefox too (because it saves my password for me) and it doesn't crash.
I'm not sure. You may need to uninstall firefox and reinstall it?
Either than, or hold a lit match in front of your computer, telling it to behave or else...

Meredith,
Try Spysweep or Adaware. Spybot works good, but be caefull ( I used it on my PC ond it took out some of the OS thinking it was spyware ) I used to use Firefox on my
Mac and it crashed alot. So I think it might be browser you are using ( it allso crashed on my old PC ), Firefox that is. Use MS explorer ????? It might work better.
Good luck..
