Any Jazz fans around here?

O.K. So, as well as being a hard core Christian metal fan, I am also a huge jazz fan. As a music major in University, I was abale to play and listen to a lot of jazz. Here are some of my favorite jazz recordings. These are also great CD's to pick up if you want to listen to some fantastic musicians.
-Any thing by the Buena Vista Social Club. they are technically latin music but are awesome.
-One of the best jazz records of all time is a record by the Oscar PetersonTrio and Milt Jackson called Very Tall.
- A recording by Lionel Hampton and Stan Getz called Hamp and Getz.
- Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
- Time Further Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
- Milt Jackson Meets the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (great big band stuff)
- Big Bags by the Milt Jackson Orchestra (jazz orchestra)
- nobody Else But Me by Stan Getz
- Benny Rides Again by Gary Burton and Eddie Daniels (tribute to Benny Goodman)
- Olinga by Milt Jackson
- Danzon by Arturo Sandoval (latin jazz. Amazing trumpet player)
- Departure by Gary Burton
- Face to Face by Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone
- Duet by Gary Burton and Chick Corea
- Native Sense-The New Duets by Gary Burton and Chich Corea
- For Some One I Love by Milt Jackson and Big Brass
- Movin' Wes by Wes Montgomery
Just to name a few. Happy listening

One that I love is Oscar Peterson Live In Vienna. Even after a stroke he can still do more with those keys than just about anyone.

At last something we have in common - I'm a big time jazz fan. I lean more towards classic jazz and swing, not so big on bebop, and really don't care for free jazz at all. However, I do like a lot of the stuff you've listed.

- Buena Vista Social Club is awesome, plus any of the solo albums by the various performers.
- Brubeck - very cool.
- Sandoval - great.
- Wes Montgomery - being a guitarist myself, gotta love him (also George Benson, a Wes follower)
- Burton, Jackson, Corea, Hampton, all very cool.

Also like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Coltrane.

Some of my own faves:
- The great swing bands - Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Ellington, Basie, Calloway, and so on.
- Louis Armstrong, the Hot Fives and Sevens, plus his later work as well.
- Nat "King" Cole in his jazz days before becoming a pop crooner; one of the greatest jazz pianists ever.
- Oscar Peterson
- Ella Fitzgerald, pretty much anything she ever recorded.
- Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Shirley Horn, Diana Krall, Billie Holiday
- John Pizzarelli

My newest thing is gypsy jazz, starting with the great gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, and continuing with the many modern players who are carrying on this tradition.

Hey JT. I agree. Pretty much anything Oscar Peterson does in gold. One of the all time best musicians and Canadians. Have you heard Very Tall by the Oscar Peterson Trio and Milt Jackson? I highly recomend it.

Klaatu. Yeah. Jazz kind of has that effect on people. Bringing people together regardless of differences. Maybe we could start a Wondercafe Jazz band. You on guitar, myself on the vibes and/or drums. We just need a bass player. I can see it now "The Wondercafe All Star Jazz Band". It is good to know that there are other jazz fans around here. I think jazz is the type of music that is timeless. It will always be cool. There is just something about jazz that when you listen to it or play it, it kind of feels right. Have you ever heard of Peter Appleyard? He is a vibes player from Ontario. Very, Very good.

Love it! Doesn't MadMonk play the bass?

Serena could play the tuba. We'll give her lots of solos.

Ouch!! How could you!!! Just when I had bought a jazz CD too. Wait THIS how you want me to be silent....I will be so busy blowing in this huge instrument and so tired from carrying it around you will have nobody to argue with you. Then you will take over all the music in the world and change it to jazz. I am on to you klaatu...I see your evil plan. It will not work. I am going to increase my weights at the gym. I will be able to play the tuba with lots of solos ( no one will probably buy our CD's unless this unpopular instrument catches on in which case I will become a world famous tuba soloist-maybe the only one in the world) and I will not allow you to take over the world with jazz music. Though with my being a famous tuba soloist that may not be a bad thing....;)

GO FOR IT! We could revolutionize jazz. You could be the world's pioneer on jazz tuba. Someone has to start it. Think of the legacy you could create.

I suggest "Honeysuckle Rose" for your first solo - the daring of it will astonish and delight our fans.

Just don't let MikeP know about this - he'll want to play the bagpipes. we have to draw the line somewhere!

Hey Klaatu. Sweet idea for Serena on tuba. I wonder if EZed plays the piano? I bet he does. I suspect though he might be in the same style of Thelonious Monk. Mad Monk strikes me as a hard core beboper. :) We have quite the eclectic mix for the "Wondercafe All Star Jazz Band". Maybe we should start with "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane.

Klaatu. Serena and anybody else. If you want to hear some very cool latin jazz. Might I recomend any recording by Cal Tjader especialy "Soul Sauce". Sooth sounds, not to bebopish for Klaatu. Cal Tjader is an amazing vibes player. One of the best. Check him out.
