Best Christmas present you ever received?

I'm not sure what category this fits under, but would people mind sharing the best present they ever received from someone?

!) Several years ago, before scrapbooking was popular, my mom made my siblings and I each a scrapbook of momentos she had collected over the years. It even had my hospital bracelet from when I was a newborn. It was awesome

2) Last year, with the help of my father, my kids made me a candle holder created out of a log of wood. Hard to describe it, but through my eyes it is a beautiful creation made with a lot of love.

3) 15 years ago I got a proposal and diamond ring for Christmas. That was a gift that keeps on giving.

I've got a few that I still cherish today. My Mom made my sisters and I books with all of her favorite recipes in them. My sister and my grandmother each made me photo albums with all the pictures they've collected through out the years.
My Mom knitted us all afghans. Knowing how much work they were and how somehow she managed to get them done without us knowing meant even more.

I hate to admit this but as a kid the present I remember the most was a "Supersize Barbie". What I find weird about it now is that i was never really into barbies let alone dolls. However I have a vivid memory of waking up on Christmas morning before everyone else, sneaking out to the living with a flashlight and seeing it under the tree. It was magical. I'm thinking I must have been seduced by the tv commercial or something. I can still remember the jingle, "It's suuupersize barbie...she's big fun."

Room to skip Christmas.

You'd think that would be an easy one, but try to opt out and you will see how hard people struggle with that decision. Those that manage to overcome their own impulses to gift me with stuff I don't want and need to control where I am on the 25th have given me the best present.

Slapdash, that is so interesting. It reminds me of the movie, "Christmas with the Cranks" (a family who tries to avoid christmas one year, with little success).

Is it a problem for you to be 'gifted'? I mean, couldn't you just accept the gifts and let it be? That way the gift-givers get their thing, and you do too.

It reminds me of my mom. She has always, and continues, to buy a lot of very useless stuff. Not expensive (thankfully!) but really stuff I've/we've never wanted. Yet after years of nagging, cajoling, sometimes insulting her, I no longer discourage her. I realize this gift giving wasn't ever about us at all.

It was all for her. She took sheer and complete joy in shopping and buying and giving to us. To deny her gift giving to us, we were hurting her for our own benefit. Now I no longer protest. She gets her joy and we are at peace.

I remember a few years ago my mother gave our family 4 tickets to see the Lion King. It was such an unexpected gift, one I wanted so badly and knew I would never buy for myself. I burst into tears when I opened it. I've never before reacted to any gift I've received in this way so I guess I would have to say that's the best one.

These days, the best gift for me is to see my kids happy and loving. I really don't care if I get anything myself.
