A Myspace friend of mine, Edmonton's own Ann Vriend, needs your help. It's mine she asked for today, but I know when I'm in over my head, so I am passing her request. Her new song, "A dollar and a suitcase" (profile.myspace.com/index.cfm ) is in need of being classified in the most suitable music genre for it. It's very moving, and it shows off her lovely voice. But what is it, exactly? She would be deeply grateful if someone who knows more about the subject than me would take the time to listen to it and either drop a note on this thread (and I will forward the comments to her) or send her a note on myspace.
Thank you in advance for helping out an up-and-coming Canadian singer.

Why does it need to be labled? For mysapce? If people like it, they like it. If they don't......meh.
I personally dig the song. If it must be put in a category I would put it in "Adult Contemporary". I really liked Where My Heart Lies.
She has a beautiful voice. Kind of reminds me of velvet.

Although solo piano is not as common as solo guitar is Roots-oriented folk, the structure, lyrics and melody suggests Roots to me. I could hear someone like Emmylou Harris, Kathleen Edwards or even The Dixie Chicks, singers strongly associated with folk-country-roots performing this. I could also imagine a high lonesome fiddle and perhaps a mandolin accompanying. Just my impression though.

Why does it need to be labelled? Because a label makes it a lot easier to market, advertise and display in a store. Thank you very much for your suggestion and your comments, consumingfire. I am going to forward all input to her.

I have received an email from Ann, which I will quote in part:
"wow, thanks for doing this. very helpful and good to get real feedback from people! i really appreciate the time you took to do this
i will def check out wonderspace, for sure"
It never profits us to demand or to expect gratitude from those we try to help - but it sure is nice to see, when it is offered up willingly.

I'd say it's adult contemporary, a little bit jazzy. But for some reason I was also reminded of Joni Mitchell...
