Yeah, but little asked about GOOD bands :) That takes a little more work.
As usual, though, good is in the ear of the listener. Maybe take a look around for some online radio stations?

Why do you think Christian Rock is a contradiction in terms?

does it have to be christian bands who exclusively play "christian" music- if not I nominate U2!

Should clarify- check there early music (Gloria for one), the many interviews about their faith and their music, and even some of the cuts on the last album

Just thought I would provide some info on where to start looking.

I've never been able to get into U2. Oh well. Thanks for the recommendations people! If anyone can link me to a rockin' Christian stream, podcast or other audio that would be great. I like metal (Maiden, Sabbath, Zep, Priest), jazz (Coltrane, Coleman, Davis, Ellington, Gillespie, etc)

I'd like get a Christian rock / blues band started in Halifax, except I haven't been able to find anyone to play with. What I want to do is make music with Christian themes but not always in-your-face about it. Like Ben Harper. But so far, this rock don't roll.

Hey...The Beatles hit 3rd place on the charts this week. Imagine, a band that split up 35 years ago and had their albums burned because they were considered heretics.
But their message lives on... All you need is love. I think they were saying "look for the positive in everything and everyone" and "live and let live".
So whatever your musical venue, does it project positive attitudes? if you hear music that you don't like, move on. If you do like it, examine its message and use your common sense to decide if it's projecting a decent message.
Don't forget to expand your musical horizons. Every venue has its good songs and bad ones. if they're singing from the heart, you can tell. If they're singing from the wallet, they're lyrics and quality of music are usually pretty transparent.
"I am the eggman, they are eggmen, I am the walrus; goo goo g'joob" (or something like that).

U2 is also my nomination... one of their lyrics in particular.
its from 'sunday bloody sunday', a song which talks about the ongoing conflict between the catholics and protestants in ireland.
'and the battles just begun
to claim the victory jesus won.'
that lyric is as appropriate today as it was over 2 decades ago when it was written. even here, on this website, we see people battling over who 'gets to claim the victory that jesus won' for us.
even their most recent song, 'the saints are coming', talks alot about god...
'The Saints are Coming'
U2 and Green Day
There is a house in New Orleans, They call The Superdome
It's been the ruin of many a poor boy, and God, I know I'm one.
I cried to my daddy on the telephone,
how long now?
Until the clouds unroll and you come down,
the line went.
But the shadows still remain since your descent,
your descent.
The saints are coming, the saints are coming.
I say no matter how I try, I realize that there's no reply.
The saints are coming, the saints are coming.
I say no matter how I try, I realize that there's no reply.
A drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief,
how long now?
Until the weather change condemns belief,
how long now?
When the night watchman lets in the thief
Whats wrong now?
The saints are coming, the saints are coming
I say no matter how I try, I realize that there's no reply
The saints are coming, the saints are coming
I say no matter how I try, I realize there's no reply

My fav right now is Casting Crowns. Their lyrics really appeal to me. Here are just a few of their songs:
"If we are the Body" challenges Christians to be non-judgmental and welcoming; "Stain glass masquerade" can we reveal how we truly feel; "Praise you in this storm" testing your faith during stormy times; and "Who Am I" Praising God's unconditional love for us.

I can't believe it took that long for P.O.D. to surface in this discussion. But anyway I have a question what is the deal with Alice Cooper (that is his stage name...I am blanking right now)...isn't he a very devout Christian?

Sorry change, I stand corrected. But I never heard of him and that is probably b/c I don't really like the organ. I have never understood why it is a holy instrument. Petra was always my favourite Christian Rock Band.

Yes, Christians can rock. I still listen to a fair amount of Christian music, even though I don't currently consider myself a believer. P.O.D., Pillar, Skillet, Starflyer 59 are all on my MP3 player.
I understand those who criticize "Christian Rock" due to the traditionally vague and meaningless lyrics involved, but this music does give young believers something to enjoy, and that's gotta be a good thing, right?

Christians should rock. We are called to praise and worship. To love the Lord with all our hearts souls and minds. This can be done in the "rock" format. Faith should be alive, so sing and dance. If it was good enough for King David then we should rock and praise the Lord also. Its not the format its the heart.

There's only three bands that I'd pay a lot of money to see in concert.
Casting Crowns is one of them :)
"Who Am I" is my life song...in other words, it's the song that changed my life around a few years back. "If We Are The Body"...the lyrics, "Jesus paid much too high a price for us to pick and choose who should come" are in my e-mail signature.

This is not an exact quote, but it's Hank Hill from King of the Hill saying something to the effect of "don't you see, you're not making Christianity better, you're making Rock music worse"
I thought that was funny, maybe not true in all cases, but certainly in MANY.

I think so, but I don't know much about Rock music. Bono (from U2) is a Christian. Maybe someone who knows more about it will post.
There seems to Christian music in just about every style imaginable.
