Carols in Advertising

As Christmas draws near, we hear more and more ads featuring Christmas carols. There is one, in particular, that I have heard on the radio that I find quite offensive. It is for Virgin Mobile and it is a rewrite of Joy to the World. It basically has the character singing it stalking someone.
So I'm wondering how you react when you here a traditional carol like this reworked for an advertising campaign.

I agree, BUT, there must be an awful lot of closet Christians out there if there have to resort to rewritting sacred music to attract shoppers.

Not only does that ad offend musically, you have to wonder at the ad writer who thought using a crime (stalking) as a sales gimmick was a good idea!

I know! Usually when an ad I don't like comes on, I just change the station and forget about it. With that particular one I notice a change in my mood for several minutes afterwards - I start to feel angry about the content. It makes me want to run away screaming the next time I see the product in a store.

I usually can't stand most christmas ads or the prevelence of christmas music in every place from the grocery store to the mall from about Oct 25 onward. But I did find that one advert for that satalite radio they had a few years back that went 'joy to the world an 18-wheeler has jacknifed' somewhat amusing.

Well, I didn't like the diaper ad that used "Silent Night" for its music.

I have to admit I have never seen an ad using a Christmas Carol I have seen won using the tune to a Christmas song for TJ max and marshalls. I don't have a problem with that one.
