celebs showing up in your hometown

I just heard via facebook this morning that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban were skiiing up at the local mountain (Silver Star) and attended a local hockey game last night (which  we lost...booo).  I mean Vernon isn't THAT big a town so it was kind of a big deal.

We have a very nice place on the outskirts of town, which famous people tend to stay at, as it is secluded, yet easy to get into Toronto or to filming spots in the area.

I always hope that they will be allowed to have a life....and some quiet space.

I know at times in the airport I think..hm....that person looks famous or like someone I should know.  Sometimes, i hear after it was

I also used to stay at a hotel in Milwaukee that was a classic and was known for taking care of actors, etc.  They had upper floors with secure suites.  Anyhow, i saw Julie Andrews one day.....and another day, there was an anxious woman waiting at a back door for her limo.  I knew I knew her, but couldn't place her  It turned out to be Pat Benatar.   Definitely the closest I have ever been to anyone famous.  I felt bad for her, as she ws sooo anxious when I came through.  I read later she was having anxiety issues in public

Celebs are always coming to the "town" in which I live --> Canada's one and only world-class city.

My hometown, not so much. I guess it would be a big deal to the people there if a celeb were to arrive.

Who is Keith Urban?

We get the odd Hollywood type coming through here on movie shoots and the like and some major pop/rock acts play the local arena (John Labatt Centre) but, alas, I've never met any of them.

My one real brush with celebrity was standing behind Bruce Cockburn in the checkout line at the Silver Snail in TO many many years ago and I wasn't even sure it was him until I compared notes with a friend who was with me.

Do you guys know Beckie Scott and her husband Justin Wadsworth?

Beckie won Gold cross country skiing for Canada in the Salt Lake City Olypmics and Justin raced on the US team.

I've met them several times.

I have not met any movie stars.

When I visit, I prefer it if the local people try not make too much of a fuss, quite frankly. Just treat me as a normal human being.

MC - Keith Urban is a country singer who is married to Nicole Kidman.

Mike - I would love to treat you as a "normal human bring" - if only I could figure out what a "human bring" was! wink

Tabitha - I do know who Beckie Scott is - how cool that you have met her! Her husbands name is unfamiliar to me.

Like Mendalla, we do have occasional celebrities coming through here for movie shoots and concerts and likely for vacations too (we are a tourist town after all). I have a rule about celebrities: if they are on "professional time," and they seem to have time on their hands then I have no problem asking for an autograph and/or engaging them in conversation. If, however, they are on "personal time" then I might pay them a compliment, but otherwise I will leave them alone - unless they initiate contact. For example, my friend and I went to a bar after attending a Great Big Sea concert once. When we entered the bar, we noticed the entire band sitting there. We walked past their table, smiled and said that we had enjoyed the show. We then sat at a table in the back. A few minutes later, the lead singer came and joined us and we spent most of the evening chatting with him. This was completely initiated by him - and it was pretty much the coolest thing that has ever happened to either of us - lol!

The lead singer from Great Big Sea....I could listen to that lovely baritone voice read me directions on programming your VCR and be perfectly happy.

You got to hang out in a bar with Alan Doyle? Lucky. My brother and a buddy once had the same thing happen with one of the guys from 80s metal band Helix (forget if it was the lead singer or guitar player). Ran into him in a bar and spent the night hanging with him. Helix was from Kitchener, my hometown, so it wasn't all that big a coincidence though.

Agreed Trishcuit and Mendalla! As an aside - did you know that he is appearing on Republic of Doyle this week with Russell Crowe?

I'd heard that. His friendship with Crowe is quite a story, actually (I heard Alan talk about meeting Crowe years ago in an interview on CBC). They write songs together, Alan's produced some of Crowe's recordings, and, of course, Crowe got Alan a part in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood movie.

I'm not very fond of Nicole Kidman, so not sure how I would react if I ran into her. I'd probly say hello, but nothing more. You'd ask me why I don't like her... I don't like the roles she chooses, and the scenes she agrees to do. I find her imprudent. I also kinda like Tom Cruise...

Her hubby (Keith) is pretty cute. Check out the pic.

Yeah, OK, That's a pretty good picture, normally I haven't thought so. And I really don't like country music!

I never expect an urbanite, such as yourself, to know anything about country music.   wink

Have you all seen Dogville? Thoroughly upsetting and disturbing film. The only thing I like her in is Far and Away.

I haven't met any celebrities my husband and son met Tom Jackson. My husband has met Billy Ray Cyrus, "Scully" from xfiles, Lloyd Robertson and some famous figure skaters unfortunately I cannot remember their names. It is amazing how many people buy taber corn from the corn stands. That is where my hubby met all the celbrities.

Surely Canada's best example of a world class city would be Uranium City?  Just to make sure there is no doubt about it being a city they put the word in its name.
