Coffee! What kind do you drink?

Just to lighten (or darken - haha) the discussions a bit...

I have been known to be hooked on Tim Hortons, especially when taking a drive through New Brunswick towards Nova Scotia.
Remember those days of Maxwell House (or other brand) Instant Coffee?

Now I drink Starbucks, whatever mild is brewing. I wish I could say I drink Fairtrade coffee ('sigh') from Bridgehead, but Starbucks just works for me.

I apologize if this topic has already made its way here in past weeks.

Oh and PLEASE be kind.

This public on-line revelation is one of the main reasons that I am using "Magda" and not my real/birth name.

I'll drink just about anything that claims to be coffee. I do get bored with drinking the same kind all the time, though.

I'd have to say my favourite is Starbucks House Blend, while I've yet to find a Timothy's blend that I really enjoy.

Magda.... Intuit.... you you guys drink Starbucks and expect kindness? Really? - oooooh you are SOOOO naive!

But... I stay my hand, just because it's Christmas (but please don't try this in the new year).

I MOST like Italian espresso, preferably on my very good friend's patio in Isernia gazing out at the peaks of the Mainarde range.

However several expressos in the morning can establish a tolerance for potfulls through the day of home-brewed, over-strenth, fresh-ground Arabica beans. I like coffee that feels like a rworkout with Muhammed Ali in his heydays. Tim and Starbucks produce thin, weak, uninterestingly insipid brews not worthy of the name... and what is a latte for heaven's sake!!! It's offensive. Do you know that many good Hindus regard milk as a form of mucus, like snot. I'm with them on that.

Decaf is absolutely utterly disgusting, a travesty... who could even dream of coming up with something like that? And, in case it isn't obvious... I think anyone who adds milk, cream or sugar to good coffee should probably leave the coffee for those who know better and start drinking chamomille tea.

There... RELAX now... the ensuing posts should be more moderate than this (this IS canada after all.)

I just drink it for the drug, but at least I'm honest about that. ;-)

I confess to being a highbrow snob. I drink organic coffee, the darker the better, with organic whole milk. I will drink Tim Horton's on a road trip, but it IS slumming for me. I also have one of those tricked out cappuccino makers. I am hopelessly upper middle class.

i also drink anything that has 'coffee' written on it. i find tim hortons is a good 'travelling' coffee... keeps you alert for hours. and by the time you have to pee, lo and behold you've reached another tim hortons along your journey!!!

starbucks is good, but only if someone else is paying. and what is with their fricking coffee language?? tall, grande, and vente?? wtf is vente?? they frickin' made up that word. just to confuse you...
'i will have a small.'
'you mean tall.'
'no, small. i just want the little one.'
'thats tall.'
'well, if thats the smallest youve got, give me the tall...'

bridgehead is good for when i'm feeling all peace and love and stuff. but otherwise, i just drink the stuff i make at home, which is usually the cheap no-name stuff from the grocery store.

At home we drink a mix of Dark Roast Decaf and Jungle Blend we order at chruch from Just US Coffee (a fairly traded roasting company in N.S.), but I have been known to visit Tims or Starbucks on occasion.

I live in residence, but we have a rather nice coffee ready for us at all times, but a nice little specialty coffee maker. But everyday I drink maybe two or three cups of mocha. I fill it half full of coffee, then go to the specialty coffee maker and fill up the rest with cocoa. Its a nice way to finish a meal and just casually chat with people.

... It also comes in handy around finals, which I am currently in the middle of (two left!).

Kicking Horse Coffee is my choice. Canadian company, fair trade and tasty to boot. Espresso is my most common but others for variety are good.

Hi Blah

Cappucino: that's doubling up on your vices... I don't drink it but the thought of it doesn't make me wretch like "latte" does. I'd serve you cappuchino, maybe, if you visited. (maybe with just a little gentle harrassment on the side).

I don't. Ever since I was told by the Dr. to cut down. Now I rarely have coffee--and then only as part of visiting with someone. I tend to drink tea instead--usually boring old orange pekoe.

I love my dark roast from Blenz. To me, there's nothing better.
My own coffee is ( road tar ) not even close. I should sell it to
the city for road repaires or roofing tar. I think it's a level 5
bio-hazared. Oh well, time to melt another coffee maker.

FINALLY! An important topic on here!!!!! :)

My story: Buy husband one of those VERY cool one-cup coffee makers last Christmas. Expensive and we had a coffee maker, but I was desperate.

What happens? I get addicted to coffee! I made it over 40 years disinterested in the stuff and now I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

The downside is you have to buy coffee online and its shipped to you. The upside is you have to buy coffee online and its shipped to you! I have boxes of chocolate almond, espresso, hazelnut, colombian...even eggnog for December. Its the greatest- just pop a little tub into the machine and its ready in one minute.

Oh gosh I sound like a commercial. Sorry about that but its like I just discovered coffee existed.

For me, it's Kicking Horse. It's fair trade, organic, and roasted in beautiful Invermere, BC. For on the road though, Tim Horton's. They are perfectly spaced for potty breaks too. The coffee is terrible, so I drink their tea, which isn't much better, but at least doesn't result in gut rot.

Every once in a while i go cold turkey - no more tim's... I recently changed offices, and had to say goodbye to some good coffee in a nice-size cafeteria and hello to a silly little coffee pot with cheap coffee which people forget to turn off, or make fresh (not that i am bitter, but, the coffee sure is). (going through withdrawal, which is probably good for me)

Preferred treat: skim milk huge latte, (aka skinny grande latte)
normal: lots of whatever i can get coffee
nice treat: fair trade coffee being served at coffee/conversation at church

I do love my Tim's .... black with 1 sugar please. (Someone's GOT to come up with a way to email Timmies.)

My favorite coffee of all is real KONA imported from Hawaii. It has a lovely texture and a fruity flavor that just cannot be beat. Sadly, the real stuff is hard to get and quite expensive ... sigh! Most of the stuff shlocked off as KONA is a blend and not worth the price. Obviously, KONA is neither fair trade nor harsh trade, being grown in the US. I sampled Jamaican Blue Mountain once, not bad! BUT, there's simply no way I'm paying that price! Insane!

Mind, I do like my green tea. The local fair trade store has a very good blend, but Tetley is as good and a lot less money .... don't know how fair trade Tetley is.

coffee mmmmmmm! i love the blends i grind at Romes independant, i go to this grocery store in my town, and they have a huge selection of beans, they are stored in their own oils, not swimming it mind you, just coated with it. the beans are all organic no pesticides. i usually choose an almond vanilla blend. the coffee Rocks! however when i'm out and about, i usually get timmy's coffee, or if i'm in the area i go to the steamy bean, again organic coffee!! i only consume about 4 cups a day, but i make it worth my while. too much coffee and i get the jjjjiiiittteerrrsss!!!

I usually brew Starbuck's Sumatra when I'm studying for exams (drinking one right now), but definitely, my favourite is a doppio expresso machiato with 2 brown sugars.. got many friends hooked on it..

Also, I got hooked on Vietnamese coffee, which is basically slow filtered coffee with condensed milk, the caffeine kick is quite something.. very tasty, can't brew it at home without the steel filter apparatus, so I had to get one.. next time when you go for Vietnamese food, ask for the "Vietnamese coffee" and you'll be hooked..

Peruvian coffee is nice and smooth, the stuff you buy in Peru, not the exported stuff.. hehe, handy to have a flight attendant friend..

Haven't tried roasting my own coffee yet.. mixing in some fair trade/bird-friendly coffees these days..

I wonder if a whole town should have an "official" fair trade coffee supplier.. I was in a town in Germany, 1000-yr-old city called Gelsenkirchen, which has an city-approved "official" Gelsenkirchen fair trade coffee.. quite amazing..

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I drink instant coffee. I know, I know. Shame. Shame. It's just that I'm the only one in the house who drinks coffee, and in the morning I just can't be bothered to brew a whole pot. When we do brew a proper pot though, it's always Fair Trade organic.

Is there such a thing as Fair Trade instant coffee? I'd be all over that in a second, if only to be a bit less shameful about my instant coffee use.

Starbucks are slightly less common up here than cockroaches. And marginally less tasty, too ;)

Seriously, I like Timmy's, low grade thought it is. And I love several Second Cup brews. But I gave them up a while ago when I made the choice to drink Fair Trade coffee exclusively. I couldn't handle the moral implications of mass-produced coffee any more. This makes me highly sad, and leads to me drinking more of the "energy" drinks, since Fair Trade is damned hard to find on the road, and since I can't really afford Fair Trade, it means I had more or less give up coffee for a while, but c'est la vie.

Fortunately, the WonderCafe Fair Trade Coffee that we can order from Mountain View Estates is a fantastic price, and so I'm back on coffee. Got a cuppa going right now, in fact.

I go on holidays to central america and bring back truck loads of fresh roasted organic beans..keep them in the freezer and grind them when needed. When the beans run out it's time for another holiday.

Starbucks is plain evil IMHO.....coffee tastes crap...the price they pay for it at the coffee plantations is unfairly low to the workers (I went to a coffee plantation and heard some interesting stories about Starbucks business practices). Timmies I will drink if I need to stay awake when I'm driving.

Right now I'd drinking some abomination that came from a pouch brewed by a robot and whitened with creamer...I feel dirty.

I'm liking Jus Us! Italian Roast, as it's all my mom buys these days. Black, unless I need to gulp it down; I'll put some milk in it. I love expresso. I like dark roasts a little better than lighter ones for the most part, but I'm open to almost anything.

Oh, and I hate, hate, hate Tim Horton's coffee.

AHyde, the best instant coffee is "Cubita"...if you happen to be in Cuba or if you know someone who's going, get them to bring back a few cans. You'd swear it was brewed coffee. I can handle the Nescafe or Maxwell house instant coffee if necessary, but the Cubita is so much better.

Sounds great. I should check into that. A trip to Germany got me hooked on black coffee, so taste-wise, Starbucks takes it for me, although I hear what you say, would always like to hear the inside scoop of its business practices--can't believe they only have one "certified" fair trade coffee out of their entire selection.

I love dark-roasted fair trade coffees. Ten Thousand Villages usually has a great selection and good prices. I'm currently drinking Cafe Myeba, a Tanzanian blend.

One highlight of my summer vacation in NS was accidentally coming upon the Just Us! coffee roastery and museum in Grand Pre. Stocked up big time there. I couldn't believe the varieties! Plus a museum - who knew?

I, personally, don't visit Starbucks, ever, but mainly because I hate the way the set up shop right beside already existing smaller businesses as soon as they see a "coffee niche". Apparently, they plan to open 40,000 coffee kiosks over the next couple of years.

But if you are interested in their fair trade stand here's their statement:

Is there Starbucks in Canada?? Starbucks is EVERYWHERE. Up until quite recently there was a Starbucks inside the Forbidden City in Beijing.

And they FAR outnumber Tim Hortons.

Starbucks coffee is abominable, but their espresso is drinkable. The best thing about Starbucks is you can walk into one anywhere and know exactly what you're getting.

How ironic, my first post is in the coffee area. Those that know me, know I love my coffee and that I'm willing to travel for it. On a typical day, I drink 8 to 12 cups of coffee or during exam week I like to move up to about 15 or 16 cups. I prefer darker blends, I can't say, I really like any of the fairtrade coffees I have tried so far.

Regular ground coffees like maxwell house are more of a travesty than coffee really should be, and I can't say I stand Tim Horton's or Starbucks anymore. Timmy's just seems to have almost no taste, Starbucks is very expensive and often the amount of options confuses me. Usually, money depending, I go to Zehrs or Food Basics and buy whole roasted beans and grind them every morning before I make coffee. If you haven't ground your own beans a couple minutes before and made coffee than you're really missing out.

If I'm at home and can brew a pot, it's fairtraded coffee for me; when you look at the price of buying coffee by the cup--even at Tim Horton's, it's not expensive as some would have you believe to support the fairtrade movement . . . and it's real coffee. Use to drink a lot more of Tim's coffee, appreciative of their community-mindedness, but (can others confirm this?) after the Wendy's buyout the brew seemed to get weaker and weaker--sometimes it tastes like dishwater. As for Starbucks and other higher-end specialty coffees, I'm willing to give them credit (and occasional business) for offering some fairtrade choices--in response to being approached by fairtraders--I can't get at Tim's, albeit for >$3.00 vs. $1.25/cup.
Disappointed that few churches, my own included, are prepared to spend a little more to serve fairtraded coffee and tea exclusively, letting their actions speak louder than words about standing up for the principle of social justice.
