Denny Doherty - Rest in Peace

Being a Maritimer (there, now you know) I was always proud when I heard that Denny was from Halifax. I love 60s music *hence my McCartney Hofner bass avatar* and I especially love the Mamas and the Papas. I really enjoyed their music, vocalization, songs like Creeque Alley, and others that showed an awful lot of talent in a group that were awfully hard on themselves and each other.

When I was studying in Halifax, I saw Denny's Dream a Little Dream: The Nearly True Story of the Mamas and Papas. I was front row, and afterwards, he came out to say hello to the 20 or so people who were there. (It was a surprise extra show so they could tweak it for the Nepture Theatre version, I think.)

The show opened with:

"My name is Dennis Gerrard Stephen Doherty.

I was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on November 29th, 1940. In the Sixties I was in a group called The Mamas and The Papas and this, among other things, is the story of that group and those times. But, as Grace Slick said, "If you remember the Sixties, you weren't there."

I got my picture taken with him (I'm not usually a star hugger) and talked to him, telling him that I listened to his music a lot when I was doing my paper route in high school. He thought that was funny, given that I was 22 at the time. I can remember him telling me a story about Paul McCartney and John Lennon and I was in awe of this cool guy who took a little extra time to talk to me. One thing he said during the show that was so funny was that he drank enough Crown Royal as a youth that he made curtains out of the little velvet bags!

Beautiful voice. Seemed like a nice guy. And an great Canadian talent.

Mr. Doherty, thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Signed,

Sad Monk

NO WAY! I'm sorry to hear it. I am a huge fan of the Mama's and the Papa's myself. And I am somewhat jealous of your encounter. What's your favorite song of their's? Btw, I didn't know Denny was Canadian...that's cool. Wasn't he the one that narrated for the kids show...Thomas the Tank Engine?

I knew Denny pretty well for a while when I was arts editor at the Halifax Herald. He wasn't always as kind to his physiology as he might have been, and did me out of a bit of sleep on one or two memorable occasions, but he seemed to have the constitution of a fairly robust ox in those days. He was a great guy and an outstanding musician. Pace, Denny.
