Dogs can be funny

I have a two year old Bouvier des Flanders

A working dog

A herding dog

She has decided at the cottage that her job is to guard to bird feeders from the squirrels

When outside she spends all day watching and chasing

It reminds us of the cartoon where the sheep dog and the wolf clock in for duty and then clock out at night.

At the end of the day she is exhausted from all the work

What stories can you tell about your pets?

We have a springer spaniel, lastpointe.

Chevy loves to play, loves to be loved, is constantly on the edge waiting for something to happen that needs his attention.....that could be the light from the laptop cover refelecting off the wall, or a squirrel in the backyard.

We had a wonderful yellow lab, Jessie, before and we loved her; however, Chevy is definitely way more entertaining.

We have 3 cats: Pablo, Estevan and Romeo. The other day when I got up for work, there was Pablo lying on the carpet with all four legs sticking up in  the air. On one side of him was a book case and on the other others side was a reuasable shopping bag. As I stood there watching him, I could see him alternating between wiggling his legs in the air and munching on the bag. So cute!

You ever heard of a snow shark?

That's when your sweetie gets into snow deep enough that only their tail shows :3

We had a beagle when I was in my teens and twenties and he came close on this one. His favorite snow trick, though, was shove his snout into the snow right up to the eyes to try to sniff what was underneath. Usually ended up sneezing.

No pets now, by the way. Mrs. M. doesn't like furry things around the house. I get a pass, though surprise.

We had a wonderful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel for almost 16 years - a wonderful breed, otherwise known as 'a love sponge'. heart

When outside in our back yard, he seemed to think it his duty to protect our airspace - whenever he noticed  a plane  far overhead in the sky  - he'd race about the yard, barking a bit, until he managed to chase it away - successful EVERY time!!

We'd give him a major shave for the summer, so his long feathery coat didn't get too stinky & caked with mud.  He'd LOVE it after getting his summer cut - very frisky, prancing about, so proud of himself it seemed.  He also liked to chase frogs at the cottage - and often when he came out of the water he'd find the big patch of mint near the shore & roll in it - so we had a lovely minty pup rather than a stinky wet dog!

Ha lastpointe, I loved the sheepdog cartoon!

My Charlie is a very gentle fox red lab and he's extra big but wouldn't hurt a fly.  He's supposed to be a bird dog but a robin landed right beside him on the deck this morning and he just raised an eyebrow because the farmkat was making a mad dash.  Charlie just likes to be by me and will just sleep by the door if I'm away.  I have a fan. cool

When it snows he's a whole different animal...he runs wildly through the snow with a big grin on his face...rolls around in it and sticks his nose in and makes tunnels.  My sons two little Havenese Shiatsu's started doing it too, to see what all the fuss was about.  They were way too short and when they got stuck he flipped them over to more solid ground.  We howled.

lol, great picture of the dogs.....

and I can picture the spaniel in mint.

I grew up with an English cocker spaniel, Carolla.  We had a hardwood floored hallway.  As a child, my older siblings would put me on a blanket and pull me up & down, and the spaniel would chase me.

Memories of standing (yes, i said standing) in the back of my mom's hot red convertible with my braids blowing in the wind, and my spaniel's ears flapping around

Memories of getting two soft ice cream cones from the stand in London, with her getting one and me getting the other.  i held htem both.  (i was about 4)

Memories, many years later, of that dog slowly dying of uterine cancer, and having a child land on them.....just  making a little sound, looking at us and then moving.   She could not have hurt anyone. She loved us all.

I had a great dog, Percolator, for 12 years.  He was a black lab, collie cross and very intelligent.  Got him when he was 2 from friends.  Their daughter was partially deaf, and the dog was trained to bark to alert her when the phone or doorbell rang.  For years I had to get used to Perk barking when the phone rang....finally convinced him it wasn't necessary.

He was very protective of me - I never worried about being alone.

When I got married, he bonded immediately with my husband and the two became inseparable.  During my husband's illness, I would come home from work to find Perk on the bed beside him offering warmth and comfort.

When my husband died, I knew Perk missed him very much so I did my best to fill in as companion.  He was a great traveller so took him with me as often as I could.

Playing in the snow was one of his favourite activities, chasing snowballs and joining me for showshoe treks.

Perk had a great sense of humour.  He liked to lay on his back and laugh at me....that's why I love Northwind's avatar of the laughing, upside-down dog.

Hi Lastpointe,

I cannot remember what it was I said to Lily last night (she is our youngest pup at 4.5 years and a lab-hound cross).

She was looking for attention from the other, older dogs and pranced by me on the couch and I made a comment.

She stopped in her tracks, whirled about to face me then barked three or four times.  That made my daughter in the armchair laugh out loud.  So Lily whirled in her direction and gave her just as many short barks.  Which made me laugh.

Then next few minutes was spent watching Lily whirl quickly to face my daughter or myself and give us several short barks.  Apparently trying to impart some sense to the both of us.

Eventually she saw her tail out of the corner of her eye and went after that.

Lily doesn't tend to bark much.  At strangers sure but just because nope.

My second only black eye was due to a love tap from our 150lb Great Dane one night after watching The DamBusters until 2am.  I was trying to go to bed quietly, I had let Cindy out, It was a cold February night and when she came back in she was energized.

With the lights out I climed the stairs only to notice her white star on her chest twist.  Knowing that big paw was coming at me I started to duck back but I was too slow and she caught me with a nail right at the corner of my eye.  And because I was lunging backwards at the top of the stairs her little tap was enough to push me past the tipping point.

My mom woke to the sound of my body falling down the stairs amidst my own laughter at 2am while 150 lbs of dog bounced around at the top of the stairs.

I weighed in at 141.5 lbs at the time.

My wife's favourite dog story was the time that Samuel our Samoyed-Lab cross got tangled around a tree while we were in St. Anthony.  Samuel was repeatedly snapping his chain and I was repeatedly repairing links so there were some snags in the chain.

Anyway Samuel was caught around a small fir tree and I went out in my pyjamas to untangle him.  Rose, our Lab-Terrier cross came out and proceeded to taunt Samuel who was on a chain that was to short for him to reach her.

So I'm trying to untangle Samuel and he keeps tugging on the tangled chain to get at Rose who is tearing all around the yard just out of reach while I bawl at Samuel to stay still.

Just as I get him untangled he leaps after rose and a snag catches the flannel of my PJ's just below my left butt cheek.  And there is nothing for me to do but stand there while 30 pounds of charging dog takes off with one leg of my pyjama bottoms.

My wife burst out laughing.  I tried to not laugh as I am trying hold on to what remains of my dignity.  To make matters worse Samuel bursts the chain, yet again, and romps all over the yard after Rose dragging my pants leg behind him.

Fortunately none of the neighbours commented on the nearly naked minister standing out beside the manse one Saturday morning.

Grace and peace to you.

John

WE jsut got a new kitten her name is Callie she is a calico kitty hence the name. Yesterday she decided to fall into the toilet, thank goodness it was clean. I haven't seen a cat move so quickly. Also Callie loves to tease out older cat. she stalks her waits until she isn't looking then runs up and bats her then skips away almost as if she is laughing at the other cat. It is soooooooo cute.

Yes, the dog dragging my pyjamas around the yard is Samuel who loves nothing better than a blizzard up his nose.

There is no winter storm so bad that he doesn't want to be out in.

He's quite a bit shaggier now.  He hasn't demonstrated a fondness or or appreciation for trims.  I empathize with him naturally.  I, regrettably, cannot get away with hiding under the table and barring my teeth.

That said, he loves to be brushed, though nowhere near his hindquarters, and after getting a hold of him the other night it looked like it had snowed in our back yard.  I'm sure the neighbours with pools will not be amused.

Here he is in the yard in Botwood.

He is leaning into a breeze of roughly 65kph.  The fence behind him is four feet high and by the end of December he will be walking across the top of it, climbing the hill as far as his lead will let him and then he'll get tangled around the Mountain Ash Dog-berry trees.

It is great fun to stare out of your house up a snow covered hill trying to find your white dog at 11pm.  Eventually he helps out with a little woof as he patiently encourages you to swim through the snow, up the hill to help him untangle.

This is the ball of fur that won our hearts at the pet store in Stephenville 11 years ago this August.

Doesn't look like he'd rip the pant leg off of your pj's does he?

Grace and peace to you.

Here's a better pic of Samuel in his element.

Botwood, NL on March 30, 2005.  By the time the blizzard ends it has dropped 79 cm of snow and has ripped the vinyl siding off of the eastern face of the Church's steeple.

At the time of the picture Samuel is playing fetch with snowballs.

Grace and peace to you.
