Faithful Athletes

Who are your favourite athletes who are people of faith? I'm not even talking just about Christian athletes, though I'd love to hear about them too. What's an example of a top notch athlete who is also a good example of a faith lived out? Who's an example of someone doing it poorly?

I work with youth, and I find athletes have a profound grip on their imaginations. I love being able to show kids good examples in athletics, to counteract a lot of the egoism that can also be found there.

I can't think of any of the top of my head but thought I would share a story with you. One day my university track coach took our training group aside for a meeting. He compared being a runner to being a Christian. He basically said that when you are a Christian you are one all day long. At work, at school, in your thoughts and actions, etc. As a competitive runner you also need to be a runner all day long. What you eat and drink, how you spend your time, your rest, etc. Not only was this discussion profound for me as an athlete, but also as a Christian. It is one of those conversations that I will never forget.

Cindy Klassen. Not only the most decorated Canadian athlete in a single Olympics and Sports Person of the year for 2006 but a very faithful Christian. All the profiles of her durring the Olympics had stuff about her mission trips to build houses and about her and her families faith.

Chariots of Fire theme, please: Eric Liddell (a Scot, just for RevJohn, though he shouldn't really be given this much encouragement).
We lived for seven years in the manse near Falkirk where his daughter and her husband had lived: they came to see us and we heard more about Eric Liddell: cool guy.

I heard on the radio yesterday that a poll of Americans founds that 13% of adults believe that God influences the results of games.

Yeah, God has nothing better to do that to mess with sports.

I wonder what happens when both sides pray to win?

I thought it was organised crime that that fixed the games.
